Kidston Island
Kidston Island is an uninhabited island in the Bras d'Or Lakes in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. The island is owned by the Village of Baddeck which leases it to the local Lions Club, which operates the beach on the island and the ferry to the island. Features The island features a lifeguarded beach operated by the Lions Club. The beach features a picnic area, changing rooms and washrooms. The island is also home to the Kidston Island Lighthouse, an historic property located on the eastern tip of the island. Access Kidston island is accessible during the summer months via a 12-passenger ferry operated by the Lions Club. History In 1819, Lt. James Duffus (half pay Naval Officer), whose brother-in-law was Sir Samuel Cunard founder of the Cunard Line of steamships, founded his home on what is now Kidston Island. Bras D'Or Lakes
Bras d'Or Lake ( Mi'kmawi'simk: Pitupaq) is an irregular estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011. Toponym Pronounced ( or ), maps before 1872 name it ''Le Lac de Labrador'' (or more simply ''Labrador''). ''Labrador'' was the name given by the Portuguese to much of eastern Canada. It meant ''farmer'', and is cognate with ''laborer''. An error of folk etymology, the name is spelt to resemble the French language ''Arm of'' ''Gold'', a homonym. Kidston Island Lighthouse
The Kidston Island Lighthouse is a lighthouse on Kidston Island, located in the Bras d'Or lakes, in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. The original lighthouse on Kidston Island was built in 1875. The present lighthouse was built in 1912 and the two stood side by side for some time. The lighthouse can only be accessed by boat; a ferry operates during the summer months. Sir Samuel Cunard, 1st Baronet (21 November 1787 – 28 April 1865), was a British-Canadian shipping magnate, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who founded the Cunard Line, establishing the first scheduled steamship connection with North America. He was the son of a master carpenter and timber merchant who had fled the American Revolution and settled in Halifax. Grand Narrows ( gd, An Caolas Mór) (2001 population 15) is a community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada. The community is the birthplace of the longest serving Premier of Nova Scotia, George Henry Murray. The Barra Strait Marina is here, operated by the Grand Narrows Waterfront Development Society. William Kidston (Canadian Politician)
William Kidston (February 11, 1816 – 1882) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1867 to 1871 as a Liberal member. He was born in Halifax, the son of William Kidston, a Glasgow merchant, and Elizabeth Dawson, and was educated in Glasgow. His sister Eliza (1823–60) married the Rev James Law, and was the mother of the British prime minister Bonar Law. In 1836, he married Margaret Ann, the widow of Lieutenant James Duffus. Kidston was a major in the local militia, treasurer for Victoria County and custos rotulorum for the county. He also served as justice of the peace. Kidston lived in Baddeck. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection to the provincial assembly in 1874.
