Kidnapping Of The Bibas Family
On 7 October 2023, as part of the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the Nir Oz massacre, the Palestinian Islamist militant organization Hamas abducted the Israeli-Argentinian/Peruvian Bibas ( he, ביבס) family from the Nir Oz kibbutz: 9-month-old Kfir ( he, כפיר), 4-year-old Ariel ( he, אריאל), 32-year-old mother Shiri ( he, שירי; Birth name#Maiden and married names, née Silberman), and her 34-year-old husband Yarden ( he, ירדן). The youngest child, baby Kfir, was the youngest hostage taken in the 7 October 2023 attacks. Shiri's parents, who also lived on the kibbutz, were later found murdered. On 7 October 2023, as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood at the beginning of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Palestinian militants (led by Hamas) abducted around 250 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of forcing Israel to release Palestinian prisoners. As of January 7, 2024, 110 hostages were returned alive to Israel, with 105 being released in a prisoner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas unilaterally and 1 hostage was rescued by the IDF. 27 hostages were reportedly killed in Hamas captivity according to Israel, 3 of the hostages were killed by friendly fire from the IDF and the bodies of 8 hostages were repatriated through a military operation – 136 remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip.
