Kiddyphone
Kiddyphone was a 1920s United Kingdom record label which issued small-sized gramophone records aimed at young children. The label was owned by the Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company Ltd., which also manufactured Imperial records. Some Kiddyphone releases were edited versions of recordings already issued on the Imperial label - this was also the case with Kiddyphone's sister label Mimosa. Kiddyphone records were issued in three different sizes (7 inch, 5½ inch, and 6 inch) during the label's lifetime. Mimosa (record Label)
Mimosa was a 1920s United Kingdom record label which issued small (5½ - 6 inch) gramophone records aimed primarily at children. Mimosa began in 1921 with a series of 5½ inch records. This continued until 1926 when a separate series of 6 inch records became available; the label was discontinued in 1930. The label was owned by The Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company Ltd., which also manufactured Imperial records. Some Mimosa records contained edited versions of recordings already issued on the Imperial label - this was also the case with Mimosa's sister label Kiddyphone. As with Vocalion's Little Marvel label, Mimosa records were sold exclusively in UK Woolworth's chain stores, at a retail price of 6d (sixpence). Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. It had co-existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. Records retained the largest market share even when new formats such as the compact cassette were mass-marketed. Crystalate Manufacturing Company
Crystalate Manufacturing Company Ltd. was a British plastics and later electronic components manufacturing company that operated in one form or another from August 1901 through August 1990. It is best known for its gramophone records (under many record labels) made of moulded Crystalate plastic. The company was founded 2 August 1901, to make billiard balls and other items as well as gramophone records, using a plastic formulation branded Crystalate, licensed from its American patent holder. The company claimed in advertisements to be the first to press disk records in the UK, a claim neither proven nor disproven, and over time focused more on the music market, producing gramophone record production matrices for more than 20 other companies by 1906, though not operating a record label itself until the 1920s. Imperial Records
Imperial Records is an American record company and label started in 1947 by Lew Chudd. The label was reactivated in 2006 by EMI, which owned the label and back catalogue at the time. Imperial is owned by Universal Music Group. Early years to 1979 When Imperial was founded in 1947, it concentrated on rhythm and blues (R&B) and country music: Fats Domino, Frankie Ford, Ricky Nelson, and Slim Whitman.
