Khoury ( ar, خوري, or ), also transliterated as Khouri, is a Levantine surname that is common to Christians in the Middle East. The term Khoury means "priest" in Levantine Arabic. It derives from the Latin word ''curia.'' Although most popular amongst the population in Lebanon, where it is the most common surname, the name can also be found within Christian communities in Israel, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. It is often given as a last name to a new priest or minister, replacing the old one and to the children of the married priest and their descendants. The Maronite Church, which is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, allows married men to become priests. It is common for a family to keep the Khoury surname for generations past the life of the priest. Elias Khoury ( ar, إلياس خوري; born 12 July 1948) is a Lebanese novelist, and prominent public intellectual. Accordingly, he has published myriad novels related to literary criticism, which have been translated into several foreign languages, including English. Khoury has also written three plays and two screenplays. Khoury has been an editor of famous Lebanese newspapers. Between 1993 and 2009, he served as an editor of ''Al-Mulhaq'', the weekly cultural supplement of the Lebanese daily newspaper '' Al-Nahar.'' Elias Daoud Khoury ( ar, الياس داؤد خوري, he, אליאס ח'ורי) is an Arab-Israeli Jerusalem-based lawyer. He specializes in real property law. Elias made appeals several times to the Supreme Court of Israel, and has had Palestinian politicians among his clients in Israeli courts. Elias gained fame in the 1970s when he led a legal battle against the Israeli settlers of Sebastia and Elon Moreh. Early life and career Elias Khoury was born in the Galilee. Lebanese diaspora refers to Lebanese migrants and their descendants who emigrated from Lebanon and now reside in other countries. There are more Lebanese living outside Lebanon (over 4 million), than within the country (4 million citizens). The diaspora population consists of Christians, Muslims, Druze, and Jewish. The Christians trace their origin to several waves of emigration, starting with the exodus that followed the 1860 Lebanon conflict in Ottoman empire. Curia (Latin plural curiae) in ancient Rome referred to one of the original groupings of the citizenry, eventually numbering 30, and later every Roman citizen was presumed to belong to one.
