Khalkhal County
Khalkhal County ( fa, شهرستان خلخال; az, شهرستان خلخالخالخال بؤلگهسی) is in Ardabil province, Iran. The capital of the county is the city of Khalkhal. At the 2006 census, the county's population was 92,315 in 22,969 households. The following census in 2011 counted 92,332 people in 25,763 households. At the 2016 census, the county's population was 86,731 in 26,779 households. Khalkhal, Ardabil
Khalkhal ( fa, خلخال, ''Khalkhāl''; formerly and local, Herowabad, Azerbaijani: , fa, هروآباد, also Romanized as Khalkhāl; formerly, Herowabad also Romanized as Herowābād, Harowabad, Herauabad, Heroābād, and Hirābād; also formerly, Herow, also Romanized as Harau and Herau)) is a city in and the capital of Khalkhal County, in Ardabil Province, Iran. Name and history According to Vladimir Minorsky, the name ''Khalkhāl'' may indicate a connection with the ancient Kharkhar kingdom, which existed somewhere in the eastern Zagros Mountains in Neo-Assyrian times.
