Keyes Bungalow
Keyes Bungalow is a National Register of Historic Places structure in Altadena, California. It is also notable as being the home of Jackson Gregory an author of Western (genre), Westerns in the 1920s and 1930s. It remains a private home. The Keyes Bungalow's architecture is also known as "airplane" style for its wide, shallow roofline that resembles airplane wings. It was placed on the Register in 1978 for its significance as an example of a American Craftsman, Craftsman style home. Altadena () ("Alta", Spanish for "Upper", and "dena" from Pasadena) is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in the Verdugo Mountains region of Los Angeles County, California, approximately 14 miles (23 km) from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center, and directly north of the city of Pasadena, California. The population was 42,777 at the 2010 census, up from 42,610 at the 2000 census. Etymology The name Altadena derives from the Spanish ''alta'', meaning "upper", and ''dena'' from Pasadena; the area is adjacent to, but at a higher elevation than, Pasadena.Manning, Mike. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901. The architectural style was most widely used in small-to-medium-sized Southern California single-family homes from about 1905, so that the smaller-scale Craftsman style became known alternatively as " California bungalow". Jackson Gregory
Jackson Gregory (March 12, 1882 – June 12, 1943) was an American teacher, journalist, and writer. Biography Jackson was born in Salinas, California, the son of Monterey county attorney Durrell Stokes Gregory (1825 – 1889) and Amelia (Hartnell), and was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a B.L. in 1906. Jackson began his career as a newspaper reporter in San Francisco. He later served as a principal at a high school in Truckee, where he met his future wife, Lotus McGlashan. They were wed December 20, 1910, and the couple had two sons. Jackson then became a journalist, working in Illinois, Texas, and New York. When their first son was born in 1912, the family settled in Auburn, California, where Jackson became a prolific writer of western and detective stories. A bungalow is a small house or cottage that is either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof (usually with dormer windows), and may be surrounded by wide verandas. The first house in England that was classified as a bungalow was built in 1869.
