Keya Paha River
The Keya Paha River ( ) is a river flowing U.S. Geological Survey. The name is derived from the Dakota language ''ke'-ya pa-ha''', meaning "turtle hill", specifically Turtle Butte. The river's name was given to Keya Paha County, Nebraska, through which it flows. The river originates in Todd County in south central South Dakota, at the confluence of Antelope Creek and Rock Creek near the town of Hidden Timber. It flows in a generally southeasterly direction through Todd and Tripp counties in South Dakota and then through Keya Paha and Boyd counties in Nebraska. It ends at its confluence with the Niobrara River about west of Butte, Nebraska. The Territory of Dakota was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889, when the final extent of the reduced territory was split and admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota. The Territory of Nebraska was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from May 30, 1854, until March 1, 1867, when the final extent of the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of Nebraska. The Nebraska Territory was created by the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854. The territorial capital was Omaha. Butte, Nebraska
Butte is a small town in, and the county seat of, Boyd County, Nebraska, United States. Its population was 326 according to the 2010 census, down from 366 in 2000. History Butte was named from the small hills, or buttes, near the town site. The Central Interstate Low Level Radioactive Waste Compact and US Ecology purchased land two miles west of Butte in the early 1990s. The land was to become the site of the compact's dump; however, following extensive controversy, the dump was eventually removed from consideration. Nebraska was officially removed from the compact after a series of long court battles that ended in 2004.
