Kevin Mitchell (safety)
Kevin T. Mitchell (born April 6, 1985) is a former American football safety. Mitchell was signed by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League on April 29, 2008, but was released on May 6, 2008. Kevin's father Stephen played football for the Indiana Hoosiers, his uncle Jon Hayes played football at Purdue University, and his brother Phil Hayes played for Arkansas. High school Mitchell attended Homestead Senior High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. College career Kevin Mitchell majored in speech communications while at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Safety (American Football Position)
Safety is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. While American (11-player) formations generally use two safeties, Canadian (12-player) formations generally have one safety and two defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game. As professional and college football have become more focused on the passing game, safeties have become more involved in covering the eligible pass receivers. The 2008 NFL Draft was the 73rd annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible American football players. The draft took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York, on April 26 and April 27, 2008. For the 29th consecutive year, ESPN televised the draft; the NFL Network also broadcast the event, its third year doing so. Of the 252 selections, 220 were regular selections in rounds one through seven, and 32 were compensatory selections, distributed among rounds three through seven. As of the end of the 2018 season, 27 players have been selected to the Pro Bowl. For the first time since the common draft began, no wide receiver was selected in the first round.
