Kevin Lynch's Hurling Club
Kevin Lynch Hurling Club ( ga, Cumann lomanaíochta Chaoímhín Uí Loínsigh) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Dungiven, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. They currently cater for hurling. The Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club in the town is St. Canice's GAC. History Dungiven has two Gaelic Athletic Association clubs. The Gaelic football club called Dungiven GAC was founded in 1943 and originally included a hurling section . In 1981 the hurling section of Dungiven GAC was renamed in honour of Kevin Lynch from Dungiven who died on the 1981 Irish hunger strike, whilst the football team retained the existing name. Kevin Lynch's club retained the hurling honours won as Dungiven as part of its history. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Derry Senior Hurling Championship
The Derry Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Derry GAA clubs. The Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1887. Slaughtneil are the title holders (2022) defeating Kevin Lynch's in the Final in September 2022 to win their tenth title in a row. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Fr Collins Cup. The winners qualify to represent their county in the Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship. The winners can, in turn, go on to play in the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship. Geoffrey McGonagle
Geoffrey McGonagle (born 26 September 1974) is a dual player of Gaelic games who played Gaelic football and hurling for Derry in the 1990s and 2000s. McGonagle plays club football for St Canice's Dungiven and club hurling for Kevin Lynch's. Former team-mate Joe Brolly said "first and foremost he was a great entertainer and character." In football, he played as a forward. For a big player he has extraordinary co-ordination and hand speed. He is also famed for his ability to dummy players. Brolly said "there were many times when you could only marvel at his wizardry". Brolly says when McGonagle "was on his game, there wasn't a footballer in the country who could have laced his boots" and described him as a scoring machine. Brian McGilligan
Brian McGilligan (born 19 December 1963) is an Irish former dual player of Gaelic games, who played Gaelic football at senior level for the Derry county team in the 1980s and 1990s, especially the 1993 team. He was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side and also won two Ulster Championships with the side. For his performances in the 1987 and 1993 Championships he won two All Star awards. In addition to Gaelic football, McGilligan also played hurling for Derry. He played club football for St Canice's GAC Dungiven and hurling for Kevin Lynch's. After being part of the backroom staff for 2007, he was appointed Derry Senior and Under 21 hurling manager for 2008. In September 2008 he announced his interest in the vacant Derry Senior football manager's job. He was also a selector on the Derry Under 21 team which won the Ulster Under 21 and All-Ireland Under 21 Championships in 1997. Dual Player
Dual player or dual star is a term used in Hiberno-English to describe someone who competes in multiple sports — for example, in Victorian Ireland, cricket and hurling. The term today in Gaelic games typically describes a male player who plays both Gaelic football and hurling or, if a female player, a player of ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. The player does not necessarily have to play at the same standard in both sports. The number of dual stars at county level has decreased recently due to the increasing demands placed upon the best players of both sports. Kieran McKeever
Kieran McKeever (born 12 March 1968) is a former dual player of Gaelic games who played Gaelic football and hurling for Derry GAA, Derry during the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. He is chiefly known as a footballer and was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning side, also won Ulster Senior Football Championships in 1993 and 1998. With Derry footballers he usually played at corner-back and is regarded as one of the best defenders and tightest markers to have played the game. In 2000 McKeever became the first Ulster GAA, Ulster player to be nominated for GAA All Stars Awards, All Stars in both football and hurling in the same season. He won the football All Star, but narrowly missed out on the hurling accolade. Swatragh GAC
Michael Davitt's GAC Swatragh ( ga, CLG Míceal Mhic Dhaíbheid Suaitreach) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Swatragh. The club is a member of the Derry GAA and currently caters for Gaelic football, hurling and camogie. The club is named after republican patriot and revolutionary Michael Davitt. Swatragh fields Gaelic football and hurling teams at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, Minor, Reserve, Thirds and Senior levels. There are also camogie teams across similar age groups. Liam Hinphey
Liam Hinphey (born 15 August 1984) is a dual player of Gaelic games who plays Gaelic football and hurling for the Derry GAA, with whom he has won the National Football League title and Nicky Rackard Cup (hurling). Hinphey plays his club football for St Canice's GAC Dungiven and club hurling for Kevin Lynch's, with whom he has won five Derry Senior Hurling Championships. Early and family life Hinphey is from Dungiven in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. 1981 Irish Hunger Strike
The 1981 Irish hunger strike was the culmination of a five-year protest during the Troubles by Irish republicanism, Irish republican prisoners in Northern Ireland. The protest began as the blanket protest in 1976, when the British government withdrew Special Category Status (prisoner of war rather than criminal status) for convicted paramilitary prisoners. In 1978, the dispute escalated into the dirty protest, where prisoners refused to leave their cells to wash and covered the walls of their cells with excrement. In 1980, seven prisoners participated in the first hunger strike, which ended after 53 days. The second hunger strike took place in 1981 and was a showdown between the prisoners and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Ladies' Gaelic Football
Ladies' Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach na mBan) is a women's team sport. It is the women's equivalent of Gaelic football. Ladies' football is organised by the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Two teams of 15 players kick or hand-pass a round ball towards goals at each end of a grass pitch, since May 2022 women Gaelic footballers have to wear shin pads. The sport is mainly played in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, where the two main competitions are the All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship and the Ladies' National Football League.
