Kevin Barry Sr.
Kevin Michael Barry Sr. (14 March 1936 – 12 February 2011) was a New Zealand boxing coach (sport), coach. He trained numerous New Zealand boxers and was for many years one of the country's top boxing coaches. He was appointed a Order of the British Empire, Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1995 New Year Honours (New Zealand), 1995 New Year Honours, and an New Zealand Order of Merit, Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2010 New Year Honours (New Zealand), 2010 New Year Honours. He coached his son Kevin Barry (boxer), Kevin Jr. to a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1984 Olympic Games. Barry died in Christchurch on 12 February 2011 after a long illness, aged 74. Christchurch ( ; mi, Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. 1984 Summer Olympics
The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It marked the second time that Los Angeles had hosted the Games, the first being in 1932. California was the home state of the incumbent U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who officially opened the Games. ''The New Zealand Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Auckland, New Zealand, owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment, and considered a newspaper of record for New Zealand. The New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) was a news agency that existed from 1879 to 2011 and provided national and international news to the media of New Zealand. The largest news agency in the country, it was founded as the United Press Association in 1879, and became the New Zealand Press Association in 1942. Following Fairfax New Zealand's withdrawal from NZPA in April 2011, NZPA told staff that it would be wound up over the next four to six months, and ceased operation on 31 August 2011. Kevin Michael Joseph Barry (born 10 October 1959, in Christchurch) is a New Zealand former boxer, boxing trainer, manager and occasional commentator. He is the son of noted boxing trainer Kevin Barry Sr. Amateur career Kevin Barry's first international success was a bronze medal at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games in the Light Heavyweight division. The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system.
