Kersbrook
Kersbrook (formerly Maidstone) is a town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. At the 2006 census, Kersbrook had a population of 367. History The first settlers established farms in the Kersbrook area in the early 1831s due to its relatively gentle slopes. John Bowden, manager of the South Australian Company's dairy farm at Hackney, bought the section 6146, Hundred of Para Wirra, and named it ''Kersbrook'' after the Cornish farm where he was born. By 1844, Bowden was recorded as having "800 sheep, 62 cattle, one horse, 13 pigs, of wheat, eight acres of barley, plots of oats, maize and potatoes, and a fruit garden". The settlement itself was created by William Carman, a blacksmith working at a copper mine near Williamstown, who took advantage of the area's location on the busy road to the Barossa Valley. 2015 Sampson Flat Bushfires
The 2015 Sampson Flat fires were a series of bushfires in the Australian state of South Australia, the area affected was predominantly the northern Adelaide Hills and the outer Adelaide metropolitan area. The fire began on 2 January 2015 during a day of extreme heat and lasted until 9 January 2015; and burnt more than . Overview The fire began in a semi rural area to the north east of the city, in the locality of Sampson Flat. It later travelled southeast towards the Kersbrook township and across the Mount Lofty Ranges., at least 26 houses were destroyed with 37 families in temporary accommodation. This count had increased to 38 houses, 125 outbuildings and 134 injuries by the evening of 6 January. The area around Kersbrook was worst hit, with twelve houses destroyed. Chain Of Ponds, South Australia
Chain of Ponds is a locality and former town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. History The settlement was established by the South Australia Company, and was originally called Philptown after founding publican Oliver Philp. First settled early in the 1840s, the township was laid out after the opening of the North East Road in the 1850s. By this time, the town was reported to include two post office buildings, institute, church, service station, a handful of cottages and the old Morning Star Hotel. In 1864, the town was renamed Chain of Ponds, after a series of nearby ponds which were connected underground. There was also a nearby township at Millbrook, but it was demolished to make way for the Millbrook Reservoir, which was constructed between 1914 and 1918 to control the flow of the upper Torrens River and supply the eastern suburbs of Adelaide from an appropriate elevation. Williamstown, South Australia
Williamstown is a small South Australian town on the southern fringe of the Barossa Valley wine-growing region. It is 51 km north east of Adelaide and 16 km south-east of Gawler. Williamstown was originally known as ''Victoria Creek''. The township was laid out in 1858 by Lewis Johnston, or Johnstone, on land he purchased in 1857, and named for his son. Williamstown has an elevation of 310 m and an average rainfall of 680 mm. One Tree Hill, South Australia
One Tree Hill is a town on the outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Playford. History The town takes its name from the 'One Tree Hill Inn' (licensed in 1851), for many years the meeting place of the District Council of Munno Para East. The inn's name, in turn, referred to a giant red gum tree which stood on the intersection of Black Top Road and Walters Road. The tree burnt down in 1890 and was cut down in 1934 and replaced with 5 trees which can still be seen today. Aboriginal history The Kaurna people were the indigenous inhabitants of the Adelaide region, which includes One Tree Hill. The Peramangk people, living further inland, visited the area from time to time, chiefly in the warmer parts of the year. This was due to the area being cooler and better watered than the plains. Hundred Of Para Wirra
The Hundred of Para Wirra is a cadastral hundred of the County of Adelaide, South Australia, spanning a portion of the Adelaide Hills north of the Torrens Valley including Mount Crawford. Location The hundred spans a large number of Adelaide Hills localities but is dominated by Kersbrook in the west and Mount Crawford in the east, with the Mount Gould Range forming a natural boundary between the two. In the west of the hundred are the towns of Inglewood (most part) and localities of Humbug Scrub, Sampson Flat (most part), Millbrook (and Millbrook Reservoir) and Chain of Ponds (most part). Brett James (footballer)
Brett James (born 15 December 1972) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). In 2015, James was inducted into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame. Early career James joined Norwood from Kersbrook from the Hills Football League in 1990. In the 1992 AFL Draft Brett James was selected by Collingwood at pick 31, and would be joined by Norwood teammate Scott Burns who was selected at pick 90. AFL career James joined in 1994, a year after he was drafted. James would only play three seasons with Collingwood, often as a bench warmer and he was traded to . Forreston, South Australia
Forreston is a locality near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area 3 km northeast of Gumeracha. History The town was named in honour of its founder, Alexander Forrest (not to be confused with the Western Australian explorer and surveyor of the same name). Forreston is curious in that, being only 3 km from Gumeracha, it did so well. Alexander Forrest, a blacksmith by trade, arrived in South Australia in 1848, settling in the Forreston area in 1850 and laying out the village in 1858. The Gumeracha North School opened in 1860 and closed in 1967. At one stage, it had a post office, store, wine shop, wheelwright, blacksmith, butcher, school and more. In 1884, gold was found at nearby Watts Gully in 1884, yielding nuggets as large as 14 ounces, and the town peaked. Gumeracha ( ) is a town in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, located on the Adelaide-Mannum Road. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area on the south bank of the upper River Torrens. At the 2006 census, Gumeracha had a population of 731. The region relies heavily on grazing, dairying, grape growing, orchards and market gardening. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Peramangk people, and the name "Gumeracha" derives from an Aboriginal word meaning "fine waterhole". The area was one of the earliest settled by Europeans in South Australia. First to explore the district were Dr George Imlay and John Hill, on 24 January 1838. Mount Crawford, South Australia
Mount Crawford is a locality in the Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia. It is named after the mountain of the same name in its boundaries, also known as Teetaka. The locality of Mount Crawford is crossed by Warren Road (route B34 between Williamstown and Birdwood) and edged by Route B35 where it branches from that road towards Mount Pleasant. The space between the two roads is Cromer, but both sides of the Y junction are Mount Crawford. The Warren Conservation Park and south bank of Warren Reservoir are also in Mount Crawford. The South Para River rises in Mount Crawford, then flows along the northern boundary of the locality, through the Warren Reservoir. Inglewood, South Australia
Inglewood is a small town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area, and is adjacent to Houghton, Paracombe and the rural districts of Upper Hermitage and Chain of Ponds. At the 2006 census, Inglewood had a population of 264. Inglewood began as a private subdivision, and was named after a town in Cumberland, England. The historic Inglewood Inn on North East Road was built by Thomas Deacon in 1858, and played a significant role in the development of the area. It survives today and is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register and the former Register of the National Estate. Inglewood Post Office opened in July 1865.
