Kerr City, Florida
Kerr City is a ghost town located in Marion County, Florida, United States. It lies on CR 316 approximately three miles west of SR 19, on the north shore of Lake Kerr. Description Kerr City was the second town in Marion County, platted in 1884. The town grew to 100 residents, a hotel, sawmill, general store, pharmacy, school/church, and a post office. It served as the stage stop for travelers commuting from the St. John's River to Ocala. Originally a cotton plantation during the Civil War, it flourished as an orange-growing community. The community deserted the town after the freezes of 1894-95. In 1884 there were and a platted 26-block town with streets such as Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Junis Terry, a doctor from Chicago, and his wife arrived and built in 1885 the Lake Kerr House. This hotel was three stories high and was made of virgin pine. Despite the precautions of taking down all the surrounding trees, the hotel burned down in 1907, reportedly by arson. The post off ... State Road 19 (SR 19) is a Florida State Road in Putnam, Marion, and Lake counties. It runs from Groveland to Palatka through Ocala National Forest. Along with SR 33, SR 19 provides a mostly rural north-south corridor through central Florida from Lakeland to Palatka. Route description Groveland to Tavares State Road 19 begins in Groveland at State Road 50 just west of the northern terminus of State Road 33, where SR 33 becomes a hidden state route concurrent with westbound SR 50 until it reaches Mascotte and becomes a county road. SR 19 runs to the north and curves to the northeast before encountering a parclo interchange with US 27. The Great Freeze is the back-to-back freezes of 1894–1895 in Northern Florida, where the brutally cold weather destroyed much of the citrus crop. Entire communities, such as Earnestville, faded after the citrus crops and trees were lost to the two unusually cold-weather patterns of the winter season.
