Kerala Students Union
The Kerala Students Union (abbreviated KSU) is a students organization in Kerala, India. It functions as the student wing of the Indian National Congress in the state. KSU was founded in 1957 at Alappuzha, with M. A. John as its main organiser and Vayalar Ravi founding general secretary. The original group consisted of M. A. John, Vayalar Ravi, George Tharakan and A.A. Samad. It functioned as the student wing of the Pradesh Congress Committee. While Ravi was the President, KSU took a leading role in the opposition campaign against the communist state government. KSU sought to challenge the near-monopoly of the communist-led All India Students Federation over campus politics at the time. Alappuzha or Alleppey () is the administrative headquarters of Alappuzha district in States and territories of India, state of Kerala, India. The National Students Union of India, the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC or Congress), was established on 9 April 1971. The organisation was founded by Indira Gandhi after merging the Kerala Students Union and the West Bengal State Chhatra Parishad to form a national students' organisation. Membership In order to become a member of NSUI, one must be under 27 years of age, must be a student, must be a citizen of India, must not be part of any other political organisation and must not have been convicted of any criminal activity in past. Shafi Parambil (born 12 February 1983) is an Indian politician and a member of the 14th Kerala Legislative Assembly. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and represents Palakkad constituency. Political career Parambil started his political life as a member of the Kerala Students Union. While in college, he was the unit office bearer of KSU and the general secretary of the college union. Parambil became the State General Secretary in 2007 and State President in 2009. Satheeshan Pacheni (5 January 1968 – 27 October 2022) was an Indian politician from Kerala, and a leader of Indian National Congress. He started his political career with KSU and went on to become its general secretary and State president. He contested Kerala assembly elections in 1996 from Thaliparambu, 2001 and 2006 from Malampuzha against V.S. Achuthanandan and in 2016 and 2021 from Kannur, but lost in all of them.
