Ken’ichi Nomoto
Ken'ichi Nomoto (野本 憲一 ''Nomoto Ken'ichi'', born 1 December 1946 in Tokyo) is a Japanese astrophysicist and astronomer, known for his research on stellar evolution, supernovae, and the origin of heavy elements. Education and career Nomoto graduated in astronomy from the University of Tokyo with a BS in 1969 and a PhD in 1974. As a postdoc he was a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. At Ibaraki University he was an assistant professor from 1976 to 1981. At the University of Tokyo he became an assistant professor in 1982, an associate professor in 1985, and a full professor in 1993. At the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe ( IPMU) he was a principal investigator from 2007 to 2017, as well as a project professor from 2008 to 2017, and is since 2017 a visiting senior scientist. Stellar Evolution
Stellar evolution is the process by which a star changes over the course of time. Depending on the mass of the star, its lifetime can range from a few million years for the most massive to trillions of years for the least massive, which is considerably longer than the age of the universe. The table shows the lifetimes of stars as a function of their masses. All stars are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust, often called nebulae or molecular clouds. Over the course of millions of years, these protostars settle down into a state of equilibrium, becoming what is known as a main-sequence star. Nuclear fusion powers a star for most of its existence. Initially the energy is generated by the fusion of hydrogen atoms at the core of the main-sequence star. Later, as the preponderance of atoms at the core becomes helium, stars like the Sun begin to fuse hydrogen along a spherical shell surrounding the core. The is a Japanese order, established on 4 January 1888 by Emperor Meiji as the Order of Meiji. The cosmic distance ladder (also known as the extragalactic distance scale) is the succession of methods by which astronomers determine the distances to celestial objects. A ''direct'' distance measurement of an astronomical object is possible only for those objects that are "close enough" (within about a thousand parsecs) to Earth. The techniques for determining distances to more distant objects are all based on various measured correlations between methods that work at close distances and methods that work at larger distances.
