Kentucky Route 1143
Kentucky Route 1143 (KY 1143) is a state highway in Kentucky maintained by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Route description KY 1143 starts at an interchange with U.S. Route 460 (US 460) and US 460 Bypass near Great Crossing. Shortly after, it intersects Betsy Way to provide access to Great Crossing High School. It then runs through a rural area until its terminus at KY 32. It is primarily used by Scott County Schools, and Toyota. Future There is currently construction to provide an expansion to KY 1143, which starts at its terminus at KY 32, adding a roundabout and then continues northbound to connect to KY 620, US 25, and Interstate 75 at exit 129. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is Kentucky's state-funded agency charged with building and maintaining federal highways and Kentucky state highways, as well as regulating other transportation related issues. The Transportation Cabinet is led by the Kentucky Secretary of Transportation, who is appointed by the governor of Kentucky. The current Secretary is Jim Gray, who was appointed by Democratic Governor Andy Beshear. As of October 2012, KYTC maintains of roadways in the state. The KYTC mission statement is "To provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound and fiscally responsible transportation system that delivers economic opportunity and enhances the quality of life in Kentucky." Georgetown is a home rule-class city in Scott County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 37,086 at the 2020 census. It is the 6th-largest city by population in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is the seat of its county. It was originally called Lebanon when founded by Rev. Elijah Craig and was renamed in 1790 in honor of President George Washington. Scott County is a county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 57,155. Scott County is part of the Lexington–Fayette, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Native Americans inhabited the Scott County area from perhaps 15,000 years ago. Evidence has been identified that belongs the Adena culture (800 B.C. - 800 A.D.), including several significant Adena mounds. The area was explored by American explorers as early as 1774. One of the earliest settlers was John McClelland from Pennsylvania, who built McLelland's Fort overlooking the Georgetown spring. U.S. Route 460 (US 460) is a part of the U.S. Highway System that travels from Frankfort, Kentucky, to Norfolk, Virginia. In the U.S. state of Kentucky, US 460 extends from Frankfort, Kentucky and ends at the Virginia state line. Route description US 460 now begins when it splits from US 60 a few miles east of downtown Frankfort. It is a winding two-lane highway with no shoulders and intersects US 62 and I-75 at Georgetown. Great Crossing is an unincorporated community located in Scott County, Kentucky, United States. Geography Great Crossing is located in west-central Scott County at 38°12'56.1"N 84°36'21.1"W and is part of the Lexington-Fayette metropolitan area. Kentucky Route 227 bisects the center of the community, and U.S. Route 460 passes south of the community center. Georgetown is to the east, Stamping Ground is to the northwest, and Frankfort is to the west. Elkhorn Creek, an 18 mile long navigable waterway, bisects the community. Great Crossing High School is a public high school in Georgetown, Kentucky, United States that opened in August 2019. It is operated by Scott County Schools (SCS), which oversees all public K–12 education in Scott County, Kentucky.
