There are 120 counties in the U.S. Commonwealth of Kentucky. Despite ranking 37th in size by area, Kentucky has 120 counties, fourth among states (including Virginia's independent cities). The original motivation for having so many counties was to ensure that residents in the days of poor roads and horseback travel could make a round trip from their home to the county seat in a single day, as well as being able to travel from one county seat to the next in the same fashion. Later, however, politics began to play a part, with citizens who disagreed with their county government petitioning the state to create a new county. Kenton County is a county located in the northern part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 169,064, making it the third most populous county in Kentucky (behind Jefferson County and Fayette County). Its county seats are Covington and Independence. It was, until November 24, 2010, the only county in Kentucky to have two legally recognized county seats. The county was formed in 1840 and is named for Simon Kenton, a frontiersman notable in the early history of the state. Kentucky Route 177 (KY 177) is a state highway that exists in Kenton and Pendleton counties in the northern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. Route description KY 177 begins at an intersection with KY 159 east of Butler in rural Pendleton County. From there, it winds west and somewhat north, intersecting with U.S. Route 27 (US 27) just north of the Licking River near Morning View. It continues west for a short distance before turning southeast to cross the Licking River at Butler. In town, it turns southeast following Mill Street. Independence is a home rule-class city in Kenton County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is one of its county's two seats of government. The population was 24,757 at the time of the 2010 U.S. census, up from 14,982 at the 2000 census. It is the third largest city in Northern Kentucky after Covington and Florence. The current mayor of Independence is Chris Reinersman. Geography Independence is located in central Kenton County at (38.953668, -84.546990).
