Kent Island (Queensland)
Kent Island is an island in the Australian state of Queensland located about 80 km North of Dunk Island and east of the Cowley Beach Training area (established 1977) and north of the South Barnard Islands. North west of Kent Island is Jessie Island, Hutchinson Island and Bresnahan Island. Geography The island is part of the North Barnard Islands which includes a total of five islands. These islands are high continental islands which rise from the seafloor. History The waters around the island were inhabited by the Mamu people. A small lighthouse was built on the island in 1897. Protected area status Kent Island is located within the boundaries of the Barnard Island Group National Park. The island is considered significant because migratory birds rest here. Recreational activities The island is also a site for popular tourist kayaking and there have been sightings of humpback whales. Camping is permitted on the island. Barnard Island Group National Park
The Barnard Island Group is a protected area in the Cassowary Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. Cassowary Coast Region
The Cassowary Coast Region is a local government area in the Far North Queensland region of Queensland, Australia, south of Cairns and centred on the towns of Innisfail, Cardwell and Tully. Dunk Island
Dunk Island, known as ''Coonanglebah'' in the Warrgamay and Dyirbal languages, is an island within the locality of Dunk in the Cassowary Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. It lies off the Australian east coast, opposite the town of Mission Beach. The island forms part of the Family Islands National Park and is in the larger Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The island is surrounded by reefs and has a diverse population of birds. The Bandjin and Djiru peoples once used the island as a source for food. Europeans first settled on the island in 1897. Jessie Island
Jessie Island is about 80 km north of Dunk Island and east of the Cowley Beach Training area (established 1977) and north of the South Barnard Islands. Jessie Island is north of Kent Island and is part of the North Barnard Islands. It is around 3 hectares or 0.03 square km in size. This island is protected by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection due to the migratory birds that rest on the island. Jessie Island is a popular kayaking location and there have been sightings of humpback whales. In early World War II, Jessie Island was used as a Russian temporary airforce landing point. Mamu People
The Mamu are an Indigenous Australian people of the coastal rainforest region south of Cairns, in northern Queensland. They form one of 8 groups of the generically named Dyirbal tribes, the others being Yidinji, Ngajan, Dyirbal, Girramay, Warrgamay, Waruŋu and Mbabaram. Language Mamu had a special mother-in-law language, called ''Dyalŋuy'' (Jalnguy). The humpback whale (''Megaptera novaeangliae'') is a species of baleen whale. It is a rorqual (a member of the family Balaenopteridae) and is the only species in the genus ''Megaptera''.
