New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 1973
The 1973 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the most radical redistribution of electoral districts in the history of New Brunswick, Canada. Under this redistribution, New Brunswick changed from a mixture of multi-member districts and single-member districts to a scheme of only single-member districts, from bloc voting electoral system to first past the post. As the number of members per district had been re-evaluated as recently as 1967, the number of members was not changed, and multi-member districts were simply subdivided to form single-member districts. Prior to the redistribution, New Brunswick had had the longest and deepest experience of multi-member districts of any province in Canada. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 1994
The 1994 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the first re-alignment of electoral districts in New Brunswick, Canada, since 1973. Under this redistribution, several districts were changed significantly due to considerable population shifts from the northern part of the province to the south. The total number of districts was reduced from 58 to 55. Due to considerable population shifts over the course of two decades, some ridings were merged, while others were split in two, and some were unchanged. John B. LaBossiere (1935–2006) was a Canadian politician who was leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party from 1976 to 1980. The party's first francophone leader, he was noted for making inroads into the province's Acadian community, taking the party to a then-record level of support in the 1978 provincial election. He was also an early advocate of environmentalism in the province, building his campaign on opposition to aerial spraying and to the proposed Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.
