Keno City Mining Museum
Keno City Mining Museum is a history museum located in Keno City, Yukon, Canada. It was established around 1979 and has artifacts related to the area's gold and silver mining.http://www.tc.gov.yk.ca/publications/keno_wt.pdf The museum occupies Jackson Hall, the city's former community centre built in 1922. It was established in 1979 with the assistance of Terry J. Levicki, a geologist who worked for United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., a company in Elsa, Yukon, Elsa. The museum is open to visitors from June to September. Around 1991, the museum received roughly 500 visitors each month during its annual four months of operation. Artifacts The museum displays objects such as equipment, and memorabilia. It has a large collection of photographs on the second floor and a garage across the street that stores bigger items. Keno City
Keno City is a small community in Yukon, Canada at the end of the Silver Trail highway. Keno City was the site of a former silver-lead mining area proximal to Keno Hill. Keno City is 13 kilometres away from Elsa, Yukon, which is owned by Hecla mining who currently own and operate the various Ag-Pb-Zn deposits in the Keno Hill area. Rich silver and lead ore deposits were found on Keno Hill in 1919, and since then the population of the community has fluctuated in response to the mining activity in the area. When in 1989 United Keno Hill closed the mines, literally overnight, the people in the Keno area who decided to stay chose a more sustainable economy: tourism. Elsa, Yukon
Elsa is a former Company town, privately owned mining town in the Canada, Canadian territory of Yukon, between the Stewart River (Yukon), Stewart River valley to the south and the Mackenzie Mountains to the north. It is located at Kilometre 97 (Mile ) of the Silver Trail, approximately north of Whitehorse, Yukon, Whitehorse and east of the Alaskan border. History The town was built in 1935 by the mining company Treadwell Yukon to support the development of a new mill for the nearby deposits of silver, lead, and zinc. Treadwell's assets were purchased by United Keno Hill Mines (UKHM) in 1946, and by the 1950s UKHM was the second largest producer of silver in Canada and the fourth largest in the world. At its peak in the 1960s, Elsa was home to 600 UKHM employees and their families. Due to economic pressure from decreases in the price of silver in the late 1970s, United Keno Hill Mines ceased operations in Elsa in 1989. Addressograph
An addressograph is an address labeler and labeling system. In 1896, the first U.S. patent for an addressing machine, the Addressograph was issued to Joseph Smith Duncan of Sioux City, Iowa. It was a development of the invention he had made in 1892. His earlier model consisted of a hexagonal wood block onto which he glued rubber type which had been torn from rubber stamps. While revolving, the block simultaneously inked the next name and address ready for the next impression. The "Baby O" model was put into production on July 26, 1893, in a small back room of the old Caxton Building in Chicago, Illinois. The original company which manufactured the Addressograph, Addressograph International, merged in 1932 with American Multigraph of Cleveland, Ohio, to form the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation manufacturing highly efficient addressograph and duplicating machines.
