Kenny Smith (bluegrass)
Kenny Smith is an American guitarist and vocalist in the bluegrass tradition. Biography Early years Smith is originally from Nine Mile, Indiana. His father and grandfather played fiddle, and Smith started playing guitar at age 4. He learned to play fiddle tunes on the guitar by listening to Norman Blake's albums. Lonesome River Band Smith began playing professionally with Claire Lynch and the Front Porch Stringband in 1993. In 1996, Smith joined Sammy Shelor, Don Rigsby, and Ronnie Bowman as a member of The Lonesome River Band, replacing Tim Austin. While a part of this group, Smith won the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) Guitarist of the Year award in 1999 and 2000. He left the band in 2001. Pinecastle Records is a record label based in Piedmont, South Carolina specializing in supporting and developing bluegrass music artists. History Tom Riggs started the Pinecastle Records in 1989 as an outlet for bluegrass pioneer Bill Harrell who wanted an outlet for his son Mitch to release a CD. The label was originally based in Orlando, Florida but moved to Columbus, North Carolina in 2005. In 1993, Pinecastle purchased Virginia-based Webco Records. They reissued recordings of some Webco artists, such as Larry Stephenson and The Reno Brothers. In 2002, Riggs received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Pinecastle folded in February 2010 due to Rigg's health issues. Phil Leadbetter
Phil Leadbetter (March 31, 1962 – October 14, 2021) was an American resonator guitar player. Life Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Leadbetter began playing the resonator guitar at age 12. He was a 1980 graduate of Gibbs High School in Corryton, Tennessee. In April 2011, Leadbetter was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of cancer that attacks the lymph nodes. After return of cancer two more times, Leadbetter was diagnosed for a fifth time in June 2019, and in September 2019 became a five-time survivor on the new drug Opdivo. This is the same drug that Leadbetter had been given during clinical trials. Leadbetter died in October 2021, after having contracted COVID-19 the previous month. Rural Rhythm Records
Rural Rhythm Records is a record label based in Nashville, Tennessee specializing in recordings by bluegrass music and gospel music artists. History "Uncle" Jim O'Neal founded the Rural Rhythm label in 1955 in Arcadia, California. He sold via mail order, records were often produced with a generic white front sleeve with a stamped serial number in the upper right corner. O'Neal insisted records would sell for $3.50 apiece (as opposed to major label records that sold for $3.98 to $4.98). O'Neal also released 20 songs on each LP album, as opposed to major labels who released on average 12 songs on each LP. O'Neal died in 1982, and Sam Passamano purchased Rural Rhythm in 1987. The Heritage Collection brand reissues recordings from the 1950s–1960s Rural Rhythm archives. Larry Sparks (born September 25, 1947) is an American Bluegrass singer and guitarist. He was the winner of the 2004 and 2005 International Bluegrass Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year Award. 2005, won IBMA for Album of the Year and Recorded Event of the Year for his album "40," celebrating his 40th year(2003) in bluegrass music. Copper Creek Records is a record label based in Roanoke, Virginia specializing primarily in bluegrass and old-time music. History Spurred by his interest in the music of the Stanley Brothers, Gary B. Reid launched Copper Creek in October 1978. Their first release was a 45 rpm single by the Johnson Mountain Boys. Side A was "When I Can Forget" and side B was "Johnson Mountain Hoedown."
