Kemuel Delgado
Kemuel Delgado Soto is a Puerto Rican activist who served as the Electoral Commissioner of Hatillo's Precinct 029. He was the first Muslim to occupy said position in Puerto Rico. Early years Kemuel Delgado Soto was born on March 28, 1998, to parents from Hatillo, Puerto Rico. He attended Father Aníbal Reyes Belén High School in his native Hatillo. There, he was one of 30 winners of the 15th Edition of the 21st Century Young Architect Contest, hosted by the Department of Education. Between March and July 2018, he worked as an administrative assistant in Arecibo at the Municipal Office of Public Safety. Upon graduation from high school, he moved to Round Lake Beach, Illinois to study political sciences at College of Lake County. March For Our Lives
March for Our Lives (MFOL) was a student-led demonstration in support of gun control legislation. It took place in Washington, D.C., on March 24, 2018, with over 880 sibling events throughout the United States and around the world, and was planned by Never Again MSD in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety. Mariana Nogales Molinelli (born October 26, 1973) is a Puerto Rican lawyer, politician, and social activist. In 2020, she was elected to the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico for the Citizens' Victory Movement (MVC) party. She had previously ran as the Working People's Party of Puerto Rico's candidate for resident commissioner in the 2016 election; she received over 19,000 votes, and ended up in 4th place. She studied environmental sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, where she completed a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2006. In 2010 Mariana Nogales Molinelli earned a juris doctor from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. She also received the Thurgood Marshall Award from the Puerto Rico Civil Rights Commission. Ana Irma Rivera Lassén (born 1955) is an Afro-Puerto Rican attorney who is a current Member of the Puerto Rican Senate, elected on November 3, 2020, and who previously served as the head of the Bar Association of Puerto Rico from 2012–2014. She was the first black woman, and third female, to head the organization. She is a feminist and human rights activist, who is also openly lesbian. Alexandra Lúgaro Aponte (born June 10, 1981) is a Puerto Rican attorney, businesswoman, and politician who was a candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico during the 2016 and 2020 elections, finishing in third place both times. 2020 Puerto Rican General Election
The 2020 Puerto Rican general elections was held on November 3, 2020 to elect the officials of the Puerto Rican government who will serve from January 2021 to January 2025, most notably the position of Governor and Resident Commissioner. In addition, there was also a non-binding status referendum to ask voters if Puerto Rico should become the 51st state of the Union. Pedro Pierluisi and Jenniffer González won the Governor and Resident Commissioner race, respectively. Independence Movement In Puerto Rico
Throughout the history of Puerto Rico, its inhabitants have initiated several movements to obtain independence for the island, first from the Spanish Empire from 1493 to 1898 and since then from the United States. A spectrum of pro- autonomy, pro-nationalism, and pro-independence sentiments and political parties exist on the island. Since the beginning of the 19th century, organizations advocating independence in Puerto Rico have attempted both peaceful political means as well as violent revolutionary actions to achieve its objectives. Since the second half of the 20th century, the independence movement has not been widely supported by the Puerto Rican public, failing to gain traction in both plebiscites and elections.
