George Kempt
George Kempt (July 8, 1821 – March 9, 1885) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Victoria South (federal electoral district), Victoria South in the 1st Canadian Parliament as a Liberal Party of Canada member. He was born in Cromarty, Scotland, in 1821, the son of Kenneth Kempt, and came to Peterborough County, Ontario, Peterborough County in Upper Canada with his family in 1831. Kempt was a lumber and grain merchant. He served on the township council for Lindsay, Ontario, Lindsay, also serving as reeve. In 1872, he was named sheriff for Victoria County, Ontario, Victoria County. In 1849, he married Anne Jane Macaulay. He died in Lindsay at the age of 63. James Kempt
General Sir James Kempt, ( – 20 December 1854) was a British Army officer, who served in the Netherlands, Egypt, Italy, the Peninsula, and British North America during the Napoleonic Wars. He led a British brigade at the Battle of Waterloo and later became Governor General of Canada. Early career Born in Edinburgh around 1765, he was the son of Gavin Kempt of Batley Hall, Hampshire. Kempt was gazetted to the 101st Grenadiers in India in 1783, but on its disbandment two years later was placed on half-pay. It is said that he took a clerkship in Greenwoods, the army agents (afterwards Cox & Co.). He attracted the notice of the Duke of York, through whom he obtained a captaincy (very soon followed by a majority) in the newly raised 113th Foot. But it was not long before his regiment experienced the fate of the old 101st; this time however Kempt was retained on full pay in the recruiting service. Kempt Lake (Matawinie)
The Kempt Lake is located in the unorganized territory of Lac-Matawin, Quebec in the MRC Matawinie, in the administrative region of Lanaudière, in Quebec, in Canada. This reservoir is located on the route of the Manouane River (La Tuque) in northern Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve. Geography Located southeast of Lake Manouane, Kempt Lake is deformed and has many peninsulas and bays. It includes dozens of islands, the most important are the islands "Aux érables" (maple), cedar island and Arikici island. The Municipality of the County of Victoria is a county municipality on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. It provides local government to about 7,000 residents of the eponymous historical county except for the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. The municipal offices are in the village of Baddeck. History Prior to European settlement, the area was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. French Jesuits settled at St. Anns in 1629. British settlement began in the 1700s after the territory was had been by France. In 1839, a property containing an inn, a tavern, and a post office was built in Baddeck. In 1841, Charles James Campbell opened a store, began shipbuilding, and developed coal mining. In 1851, Victoria County was split from Cape Breton County, and Baddeck became the site for the new county's jail and court house, and later the site of Alexander Graham Bell's Beinn Bhreagh, a summer residence and research centre, and the Bell Boatyard.
