Kelvinside-West is a former rugby union team that played their home games at Balgray Playing Fields, Glasgow, Scotland. Kelvinside-West was a short-lived rugby union club based on the merger of Kelvinside Academicals and West of Scotland. History The team was founded in 1945 after the Second World War in a bid to regroup and once again kick start rugby union in Glasgow. The main drivers of the merger were West of Scotland who found themselves out of a home after being evicted by the West of Scotland Cricket Club who played at Hamilton Crescent, their old ground. In 1951–52 season both Kelvinside Academicals and West of Scotland became strong enough to once again have their own teams and the merger ended. The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. Scotland National Rugby Union Team
The Scotland national rugby union team represents Scotland in men's international rugby union and is administered by the Scottish Rugby Union. The team takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship and participates in the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years. As of 4 December 2022, Scotland are 7th in the World Rugby Rankings. The history of the team extends back to 1871 when the Scottish rugby team played their first official test match, winning 1–0 against England at Raeburn Place. Glasgow District (rugby Union)
Glasgow District was a Scottish amateur rugby union team which now plays as the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors. Founded in 1872 it was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Historically the Glasgow District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Glasgow District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Edinburgh District rugby union team. William Lorn Kerr Cowie, Lord Cowie (born 1 June 1926) is a retired Scottish Senator of the College of Justice and former Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby union career Amateur career Cowie played rugby at Fettes College, Fettes where he played Centre (rugby union), Centre. He attended Clare College, Cambridge after Fettes but his studies were interrupted by WWII. In Glasgow, Cowie played and captained Kelvinside-West after the 2nd world war. Kelvinside-West was a short term club merger fix for a post-war player shortage and as numbers increased the constituent clubs of Kelvinside Academicals RFC, Kelvinside Academicals and West of Scotland F.C., West of Scotland once again went their own ways. Kelvinside Academicals RFC
Kelvinside Academicals is a former rugby union team that played their home games at Balgray Playing Fields, Glasgow, Scotland. The team was founded in 1888 by former pupils of the Kelvinside Academy. The team no longer exists. In 1982 it merged with Glasgow HSFP - the rugby team of another school; the High School of Glasgow - to form a rugby club called Glasgow High Kelvinside. In 1997, the 1st XV of Glasgow High Kelvinside merged with the 1st XV of Glasgow Academicals to form Glasgow Hawks. Both GHK and Academicals survived the merger as individual clubs and now compete in SRU National League 2 - 2 divisions below Hawks. In 2018 Glasgow Hawks relocated to Balgray from Old Anniesland to play their games there in the Tennent's Premiership as part of a new partnership with Kelvinside Academy. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the first international football match, between Scotland and England, played on 30 November 1872, which ended in a goalless draw, and was watched by a crowd of 4,000. A plaque on the wall of the clubhouse was placed to commemorate the match in 2002 by Mr John C McGinn, President of the Scottish Football Association. Further international matches were held here in 1874 and 1876, before being moved to the first Hampden Park. The West of Scotland Cricket Club is a cricket club based in Glasgow, Scotland. The club's home ground is Hamilton Crescent, located in the Partick area of Glasgow's West End. West of Scotland, traditionally, are one of the working class cricket clubs in Glasgow and on a summer's day there can be quite a jovial, rowdy, yet well informed support on the famous banking. West can boast a host of famous players who have both played at the ground and for the club. Recently two of these have been famous Scottish internationalists, the opening batsman Douglas Lockhart and bowler John Blain.
