Keleti Railway Station
Budapest Keleti (Eastern) station ( hu, Keleti pályaudvar) is the main international and inter-city railway terminal in Budapest, Hungary. The station stands where Rákóczi út splits to become Kerepesi Avenue and Thököly Avenue. Keleti pályaudvar translates to ''Eastern Railway Terminus''. Its name in 1891 originates not only for its position as the easternmost of the city's rail termini, but for its original role as a terminus of the lines from eastern Hungary including Transylvania, and the Balkans. In contrast, the Nyugati (''western'') railway station used to serve lines toward Vienna and Paris. Architecture The building was designed in eclectic style by Gyula Rochlitz and János Feketeházy and constructed between 1881 and 1884. Hegyeshalom
Hegyeshalom (; german: Straß-Sommerein) is a village of approximately 3600 inhabitants in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Hungary, on the border with Austria and less than 15 km from the border with Slovakia. History A charter given by Andrew II of Hungary in 1217 mentions the settlement as Hegelshalm. After the Ottoman wars, the town was settled by German Jewish settlers. They were exterminated during the latter part of WW2. The name of Hegyeshalom is from the two Hungarian words = hegyes + halom. The word "hegyes" means "mountainous" (or "piked") and the word "halom" means "pile" (or "hill"). Border crossing Until 21 December 2007, at 00:00 CET, Hegyeshalom was an important border crossing and control point between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Budapest-Nyugati Railway Terminal
Budapest-Nyugati (western) railway station ( hu, Nyugati pályaudvar), generally referred to simply as Nyugati, is one of the three main railway terminals in Budapest, Hungary. The station is on the Pest side of Budapest, accessible by the 4 and 6 tramline and the M3 metro line. History The station was planned by August de Serres and was built by the Eiffel Company. It was opened on 28 October 1877. It replaced a previous station, which was the terminus of Hungary's first railway line, the Pest–Vác line (constructed in 1846). This building was pulled down in order to construct the Grand Boulevard. EuroNight, abbreviated EN, is a European train category which denotes many main-line national and international night train services within the Western and Central European inter-city rail network. Wien Westbahnhof
Wien Westbahnhof (Vienna West station) is a major Austrian railway station, the original starting point of the West railway (''Westbahn'') and a former terminus of international rail services. In 2015, its role changed with the opening of Vienna's new main station and Westbahnhof now is mainly a commuter station and the terminus of private rail operator WESTbahn's intercity service from Salzburg. Locally, Wien Westbahnhof is served by S-Bahn line S50 and U-Bahn lines U3 and U6. Six tram lines converge on Europaplatz in front of the station, although none go into the city centre. Lehár (train)
The ''Lehár'' was an express train between Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria. Introduced in 1979, it was the first eastern European train to become a EuroCity service, Brunhouse (1989). in 1988. The train was operated by the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). It was named after Franz Lehár (1870–1948), an Austro-Hungarian composer. It was replaced by a Railjet service in 2008. History The ''Lehár'' first ran in 1979. The following year, a trip on the train was featured in "Changing Trains", the final episode in Series 1 of '' Great Railway Journeys of the World'', a BBC TV travel documentary. EuroCity
EuroCity, abbreviated as EC, is a cross-border train category within the European inter-city rail network. In contrast to trains allocated to the lower-level "IC" (InterCity) category, EC trains are international services that meet 20 criteria covering comfort, speed, food service, and cleanliness. Each EC train is operated by more than one European Union or Swiss rail company, under a multilateral co-operative arrangement, and all EC trains link important European cities with each other. The EuroCity label replaced the older Trans Europ Express (TEE) name for border-crossing trains in Europe. Whereas TEE services were first-class only, EuroCity trains convey first and second class coaches. Zürich Hauptbahnhof (often shortened to Zürich HB, or just HB; ''Zürich Main Station'' or ''Zürich Central Station'') is the largest railway station in Switzerland. München Hauptbahnhof or Munich Central Station is the main railway station in the city of Munich, Germany. It is one of the three stations with long-distance services in Munich, the others being Munich East station (''München Ost'') and Munich-Pasing station (''München-Pasing''). George Stephenson
George Stephenson (9 June 1781 – 12 August 1848) was a British civil engineer and mechanical engineer. Renowned as the "Father of Railways", Stephenson was considered by the Victorians a great example of diligent application and thirst for improvement.
