Keith Butler (baseball)
Keith Allen Butler (born January 30, 1989) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals. Education A native of Morgantown, Kentucky, Butler attended Butler County High School and Wabash Valley College. At Wabash he made 20 appearances for the "Warriors", posting a 2.72 ERA with 59 strikeouts and an overall record of 6–2 in 43 innings of work on the mound. Professional career Minor leagues The Cardinals selected Butler in the 24th round of the 2009 MLB draft, the 729th overall selection. Among future Cardinal teammates also taken in the 2009 draft were Trevor Rosenthal, Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter. He split time his first season between the Gulf Coast League Cardinals and the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League, posting a combined 1–1 record for the season with an ERA of 2.08 and 38 strikeouts over 30 1/3 innings. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The Appalachian League is a collegiate summer baseball league that operates in the Appalachian regions of Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Designed for rising freshmen and sophomores using wood bats, its season runs from June to August. The league is part of Major League Baseball and USA Baseball's Prospect Development Pipeline. Between 1911 and 2020, the Appalachian League operated as part of Minor League Baseball and various of its teams were affiliated with Major League Baseball franchises. Busch Stadium (also referred to informally as "New Busch Stadium" or "Busch Stadium III") is a baseball stadium located in St. Louis, Missouri. The Texas League is a Minor League Baseball league which has operated in the South Central United States since 1902. It is classified as a Double-A league. Despite the league's name, only its five South Division teams are actually based in the state of Texas; the five North Division teams are located in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The league was founded in 1888 and ran through 1892. It was called the Texas Association in 1895, the Texas-Southern League in 1896, and again as the Texas League from 1897 to 1899. The Peoria Javelinas are a baseball team that plays in the West Division of the Arizona Fall League. The Javelinas play their home games in the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. The Arizona Fall League (AFL) is an off-season sports league owned and operated by Major League Baseball (MLB) which operates during the autumn in Arizona, United States, at six different baseball complexes.
