Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning
"Keep Your Lamp(s) Trimmed and Burning" is a traditional gospel blues song. It alludes to the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins, found in the Gospel of Matthew at 25:1-13, and also to a verse in the Gospel of Luke, at 12:35. The song has been attributed to Blind Willie Johnson, who recorded it in 1928; to Reverend Gary Davis, who recorded it in 1956; and to Mississippi Fred McDowell, who recorded it in 1959. The song has been included in several hymnals. Lyrics The song is in call-and-response format. As is common with traditional songs, lyrics vary between performersin this instance, often very widely. A usual first verse is: "The world" and "the time" relate to the apocalyptic prophecies of the New Testament. "The work" can do so also, but suggests that the song may derive from an African-American work song. Recordings Recordings by people with Wikipedia articles include: * 1928 Blind Willie Johnson * 1956Reverend Gary Davis * 1959 Mississippi Fred McDowell * ...

Gospel Blues
Gospel blues (or holy blues) is a form of blues-based gospel music that has been around since the inception of blues music. It combines evangelistic lyrics with blues instrumentation, often blues guitar accompaniment. According to musician and historian Stefan Grossman, "holy blues" was coined to originally describe Reverend Gary Davis's style of traditional blues playing with lyrics conveying a religious message. Davis and Blind Willie Johnson are considered the genre's two dominant performers, according to Dick Weissman. Other notable gospel-blues performers include Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Washington Phillips. Blues musicians who became devout, or even practicing clergy, include Reverend Robert Wilkins and Ishman Bracey.Wardlow, G., and Komara, E. M. (1998). Hot Tuna (album)
''Hot Tuna'' is the debut album by the American blues rock band Hot Tuna, released in 1970 as RCA Victor LSP-4353. It was recorded live at the New Orleans House in Berkeley, California in September 1969. It peaked at #30 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart. Context and content Hot Tuna began as a means of relaxation for Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady while on tour with Jefferson Airplane, eventually becoming a separate entity within that band to the point of performing as its opening act. In the beginning, Hot Tuna would play in the style of electric Chicago blues often augmented by Airplane members, such represented by a cover of B.B. King's " Rock Me Baby" on the live Airplane album ''Bless Its Pointed Little Head''. For their first album, Kaukonen and Casady decided on a semi-acoustic set rooted in the country blues of the pre-World War II era. The Reverend Gary Davis had been an early influence on Kaukonen, and two of his songs were included on the album, with an additio ...

Hot Rize
Hot Rize is a bluegrass band that rose to prominence in the early 1980s. Established in 1978, Hot Rize has appeared on national radio and TV shows, and has toured most of the United States, as well as Japan, Europe and Australia. History Hot Rize started performing January 18, 1978, with Tim O'Brien on mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick on banjo, Charles Sawtelle on bass and Mike Scap on guitar. Scap left the band with Nick Forster (electric bass) joining in April, thereby allowing Sawtelle to switch to acoustic guitar. That established the four-man line-up that lasted over 20 years: O'Brien on mandolin, fiddle and lead vocals, Forster on electric bass, harmony vocals, and emcee work, Sawtelle, on guitar and occasional lead vocals, and Wernick as "Dr. Banjo". Their first, self-titled album was recorded in 1979 with follow-up ''Radio Boogie'', released in 1981. The band issued six studio albums before disbanding in 1990. That year they received the first Entertainer of the ...

Splashdown (Hot Tuna Album)
''Splashdown'' is a Hot Tuna album released in 1984 containing the tracks from a previously unreleased live acoustic performance that had been played on the short-lived radio station WQIV in the mid-1970s. During the recording, news of the Apollo–Soyuz mission returning to Earth after the first USA-USSR rendezvous in space reached the station, and the astronauts' radio transmissions were played at the same time as Jorma and Jack continued with "Police Dog Blues." The transmissions mixed with the song were preserved for this release as the last track of side 1. The album was Hot Tuna's first release on Relix Records, and one of the first Relix releases. Jorma Kaukonen was signed on as a solo artist to the label as well. In 1997 an expanded version of the album was released as Splashdown Two. Critical reception On AllMusic, William Ruhlmann wrote, "At the time, Hot Tuna recently had released its ''America's Choice'' album, but this set harks back to the group's 1970 debut a ...

Double Dose (Hot Tuna Album)
''Double Dose'' is the eighth album by the American blues rock band Hot Tuna, and their third live album. The album was originally released as a double-LP as Grunt CYL2-2545. After their 1977 tour, Jorma Kaukonen moved on to a solo career and Jack Casady joined the new wave band SVT. Hot Tuna would not perform together again until 1983. The album had its highest peak at #92 on the Billboard charts. The group recorded the album as a cost-saving alternative to a studio album. However the mixing process considerably raised the album's expense. Producer Felix Pappalardi heavily edited the concert tapes and had Kaukonen re-record his vocals for sides 2 through 4 at Wally Heider Studios. Track listing All tracks written by Jorma Kaukonen, except where noted. Old Fashioned Love (John Fahey Album)
''Old Fashioned Love'' is an album by American fingerstyle guitarist and composer John Fahey, released in 1975. It is credited on the cover to John Fahey & His Orchestra. History In a similar manner as his previous Reprise releases with accompanists, ''Old Fashioned Love'' did not sell well. For his part, Fahey remarked that he had never worked with such sympathetic, understanding musicians as he did on this release. The front cover is a 1901 photograph of Anna Held, the wife of impresario Florenz Ziegfeld. Woody Mann plays duets with Fahey on "In a Persian Market", "Jaya Shiva Shankarah", and "Marilyn". Guitarist Stefan Grossman responded to "The Assassination of Grossman" with his own composition, "The Assassination of John Fahey" on his album ''Thunder on the Run''. "Dry Bones in the Valley" was shortened by one minute on subsequent CD reissues. The 1930s title song, written by Frank Loesser and Fritz Miller, was the theme song of Fritz Miller and his Orchestra.
