Keachi, Louisiana
Keachi (pronounced "key-chai"; also spelled Keatchie or Keachie) is a town in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 295 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Keachi features several sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Allen House, Keachi Baptist Church, Keachi Presbyterian Church, Keachi Store, Keachi United Methodist Church, Liberty Lodge, The Oaks, Prude House, Spell House, and the Swearingen House. It also includes Keachie College. During the American Civil War, the Keatchie "highlanders" obtained $1,500 from the DeSoto Parish Police Jury for the war effort. The highlanders were known for their unusual dress, kilts and plaids, purchased with these funds.John D. DeSoto Parish ( French: ''Paroisse DeSoto'') is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1843. At the 2010 U.S. census, the population was 26,656; at the 2020 census, its population increased to 26,812. Its parish seat is Mansfield. DeSoto Parish is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan statistical area. History It is a typical misconception that the parish was named after Hernando de Soto, the Spaniard who explored the future southeastern United States and discovered and named the Mississippi River. The parish was in fact named after the unrelated Marcel DeSoto, who led the first group of European settlers there, to a settlement historically known as Bayou Pierre. The parish's name is also commonly misspelled following the explorer's name as "De Soto Parish," but it is properly spelled following the settler's name as "DeSoto Parish." Louisiana Highway 5 (LA 5) is a state highway located in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. It runs in a general southwest to northeast direction from U.S. Highway 84 (US 84) in Logansport to LA 175 in Kingston. An almost entirely rural route, LA 5 is located between the Texas state line and Interstate 49 (I-49) south of Shreveport in the northwest portion of the state. It begins in Logansport as a north–south route and is signed accordingly. In Keatchi, its direction and signage switches to east–west. Shortly afterward, LA 5 crosses US 171 in Gloster.
