Kazuo Otani
Kazuo Otani (June 2, 1918 – July 15, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in World War II.US Army Center of Military History"Medal of Honor Recipients, World War II (M-S)" retrieved 2012-12-27. Early life Otani was born in California. His parents were immigrants from Japan. He was a ''Nisei'', which means that he was a second generation Japanese-American. Otani's family was interned at the Gila River War Relocation Center in Arizona following enforcement of Executive Order 9066. Soldier Otani joined the US Army in February 1942, and volunteered to be part of the all-''Nisei'' 442nd Regimental Combat Team. This army unit was mostly made up of Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the mainland. The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the United States Army's second highest military decoration for soldiers who display extraordinary heroism in combat with an armed enemy force. Actions that merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree that they are above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations, but which do not meet the criteria for the Medal of Honor. The Army Distinguished Service Cross is equivalent to the Navy and Marine Corps' Navy Cross, the Air Force and Space Force's Air Force Cross, and the Coast Guard Cross.
