Kazem El-Solh
Kazem El-Solh (1904 – 25 December 1976) was a Lebanese politician, a diplomat and the founder of a political party and a newspaper. He was a member of parliament in Lebanon and served as the country's ambassador to Iraq. Early life and education He hails from a prominent Sunni Muslim family which gave Lebanon four prime ministers, his brother Takieddine Solh, as well as Riad Solh, Sami Solh and Rachid Solh. The Solh family is originally from the ancient port city of Sidon in southern Lebanon. Kazem El-Solh was born in 1904 in Beirut. He attended the International College, Beirut, then studied at the Jesuit School, also in Beirut, before graduating with a law degree from the University of Damascus. Career Kazem El-Solh served as Lebanese Ambassador in Baghdad from 1947 to 1960, leaving Iraq a year after the coup ousting the Hashemite monarchy in the country. Lebanese Nationality Law
Lebanese nationality law governs the acquisition, transmission and loss of Lebanese citizenship. Lebanese citizenship is the status of being a citizen of Lebanon and it can be obtained by birth or naturalisation. Lebanese nationality is transmitted by paternity (father) (see Jus sanguinis). Therefore, a Lebanese man who holds Lebanese citizenship can automatically confer citizenship to his children and foreign wife (only if entered in the Civil Acts Register in the Republic of Lebanon). Under the current law, descendants of Lebanese emigrants can only receive citizenship from their father and women cannot pass on citizenship to their children or foreign spouses. On 12 November 2015, the Parliament of Lebanon approved a draft law that would allow "foreigners of Lebanese origin to get citizenship." Al Nida (newspaper)
''Al Nida'' (Arabic: النداء; ''The Appeal'') was a daily newspaper which was published in Beirut, Lebanon, in the period 1930–1940. The paper also had a French language edition. It is known for being one of the first Arabic newspapers which featured translations of Adolf Hitler's book ''Mein Kampf''. History and profile ''Al Nida'' was established by Kazem Al Solh in Beirut in 1930. He also owned and edited the paper which ceased publication in 1940. It was published daily in Arabic, but also had a French edition. The paper was consisted of eight pages. ''Al Nida'' had an Arab nationalist political stance. Although the daily was based in Beirut, most of its readers were in Damascus, Palestine, Transjordan and Iraq. Lebanese Muslims
Islam in Lebanon has a long and continuous history. According to an estimate by the CIA, it is followed by 67.8% of the country's total population. Sunnis make up 31.9%, Shias make up 31.2%, with smaller percentages of Alawites and Ismailis. The Druze community is designated as one of the five Lebanese Muslim communities (Sunni, Shia, Druze, Alawi, and Ismaili), even though most Druze do not identify as Muslims, and they do not accept the five pillars of Islam. Under the terms of an agreement known as the National Pact between the various political and religious leaders of Lebanon, the president of the country must be a Maronite, the Prime Minister must be a Sunnite, and the Speaker of Parliament must be a Shiite. National Pact
The National Pact ( ar, الميثاق الوطني, translit-std=DIN, translit=al Mithaq al Watani) is an unwritten agreement that laid the foundation of Lebanon as a multiconfessional state following negotiations between the Shia, Sunni, and Maronite leaderships. Erected in the summer of 1943, the National Pact was formed by then-president Bechara El Khoury and the prime minister Riad Al Solh. Mainly centered around the interests of political elites, the Maronite elite served as a voice for the Christian population of Lebanon while the Sunni elite represented the voice of the Muslim population. The pact also established Lebanon's independence from France.
