Kazak Island lies 1 km south of Hawker Island and 0.5 km west of the Mule Peninsula, in Prydz Bay on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, Antarctica. The nearest permanent research station is Australia's Davis Station, Davis, some 10 km to the north-east on Broad Peninsula, Vestfold Hills. The Kazakhs (also spelled Qazaqs; Kazakh: , , , , , ; the English name is transliterated from Russian; russian: казахи) are a Turkic-speaking ethnic group native to northern parts of Central Asia, chiefly Kazakhstan, but also parts of northern Uzbekistan and the border regions of Russia, as well as Northwestern China (specifically Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture) and Mongolia ( Bayan-Ölgii Province). The Kazakhs are descendants of the ancient Turkic Kipchak tribes and the medieval Mongolic tribes, and generally classified as Turco-Mongol cultural group. ''Qazaq'' ( kk, Қазақ, قازاق) was a Kazakh language weekly journal started by Akhmet Baitursynov (editor in chief), Alikhan Bukeikhanov and Mirjaqip Dulatuli. ''Qazaq'' was published from 1913 until March 1918, when it was shut down by the Soviet government. Influenced by other Jadid journals, ''Qazaq'' was considered to be a medium promoting the emerging Kazakh nationalism against Tsarist imperial policies.
