Katja Hoyer
Katja Hoyer (born 1985) is a German-British historian, journalist and writer. Life and career Hoyer was born in Guben, East Germany, where her mother was a teacher and her father an East German military officer. She received a Master's degree from the University of Jena and moved to the United Kingdom in about 2010. Hoyer is a visiting research fellow at King's College London and has published two books about the history of Germany. She is also a journalist for '' The Spectator'', '' The Washington Post,'' ''Times Literary Supplement'', '' UnHerd'', and '' Die Welt''. Her first book, ''Blood and Iron'', about the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, was well reviewed, even though some reviewers suggested that she had played down the negative aspects of the period and of Otto von Bismarck's legacy. Erich Honecker
Erich Ernst Paul Honecker (; 25 August 1912 – 29 May 1994) was a German communist politician who led the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1971 until shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. He held the posts of General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and Chairman of the National Defence Council; in 1976, he replaced Willi Stoph as Chairman of the State Council, the official head of state. As the leader of East Germany, Honecker had close ties to the Soviet Union, which maintained a large army in the country. Honecker's political career began in the 1930s when he became an official of the Communist Party of Germany, a position for which he was imprisoned by the Nazis. Chris Gueffroy (21 June 1968 – 6 February 1989) was the last person to be shot and the second-last to die in an escape attempt while trying to escape from East Berlin to West Berlin across the Berlin Wall.
