The Cool Mikado
''The Cool Mikado'' is a British musical film released in 1963, directed by Michael Winner (who makes a short appearance as an airline passenger à la Hitchcock near the start of the film), and produced by Harold Baim, with music arranged by Martin Slavin and John Barry. It starred Frankie Howerd as Ko-Ko, Lionel Blair and Stubby Kaye. The script was written by Michael Winner, from an adaptation by Maurice Browning. Based on the 1885 Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera ''The Mikado'', the plot is reset into contemporary Japan as a comic gangster story. The dialogue is largely rewritten, and several of the well-known musical items are omitted. The music that remains is re-orchestrated into styles popular in the early 1960s, including the twist, and the Cha-Cha-Cha. Filmed entirely on a sound stage, stock footage was used to provide Japanese atmosphere between scenes. Dr. Kate Shaw (born 1961, in Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian academic, planning activist and commentator, currently serving as a research fellow at the University of Melbourne. Background Kate Shaw worked in alternative theatre and arts publicity in Melbourne in the 1980s, before undertaking a post-Graduate Diploma in urban policy and planning (1993) and a Masters in urban planning (1999), both at RMIT. She then moved to the University of Melbourne and taught planning law, statutory planning, urban design, and ran classes on political economy, gentrification and the cultures of cities. Professor Shaw's PhD in planning (University of Melbourne, 2005) was "Room to move: the politics of protecting the place of alternative culture" and used a number of case studies from European and Australian cities to investigate the range of policies that have been used to support alternative culture in neighbourhoods subject to gentrification. Te Ngakauiti 'Kate Shaw' (, 9 September 1896 – 27 September 1999) was a New Zealand writer who wrote poems, stories for children and non-fiction articles. She was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for community service in 1997. Early life Born Te Ngakauiti Kate Shaw in Rotorua, New Zealand one of nine children to Fox Maule Carnachan and Sarah Te Ngakauiti Carnachan. Fox was born in Manchester, England and arrived to Auckland with his parents in 1864. His family later moved to Cambridge to then Rotorua. Shaw grew up on the banks of the Utuhina river which is located on the outskirts of Rotorua. All of the nine children from Fox and Sarah were given Māori names but were christened with English names. Shaw was named after her great-grandmother Te Ngakauiti who lived on Mokoia Island. Te Ngakauiti was taken away further north after the 1823 raid by Hongi Hika.
