Katie Ohe
Katie Ohe, (born Katherine Dorothea Minna von der Ohe 1937, near Peers, Alberta) is a Canadian sculptor living in Calgary, Alberta. Ohe is known as one of the first artists to make abstract sculpture in Alberta, and has been influential as a teacher at the Alberta College of Art and Design. She is best known for her abstract and kinetic sculptures. Biography She began her studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary (then the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art) 1954 to 1957 under the guidance of pioneer modernist artist Marion Nicoll. Other influential instructors were Illingworth Kerr, Stan Blodgett, Ken Sturdy and ceramist Luke Lindoe. Lindoe invited her to work at Ceramics Arts in the summer of 1957, where she worked alongside Walter Dexter, Walt Drohan, Luke Lindoe and Pat Banks (Drohan). Alberta College Of Art And Design
The Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is a public art university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The university is a co-educational institution that operates four academic schools. Evan Penny
Evan Penny (born 1953, in South Africa), currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1978, Penny graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design and received a post-graduate degree in sculpture. Evan Penny makes sculptures of human forms out of silicone, pigment, hair and aluminium. His pieces range from the almost precisely lifelike, to the blurred or stretched. Penny says one of his interests "is to situate the sculptures perceptually between the way we might see each other in real time and space and the way we imagine our equivalent in a photographic representation." Though his creations are lifelike, Penny believes that "the real can't be represented or symbolized," leaving everything to be a representation.
