Katie Bernhardt has served as the chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party since September 2020. Career Bernhardt graduated from Louisiana State University Law Center. Bernhadt and her husband operate Standard Law in Lafayette, Louisiana. She served as a member on the Democratic state central committee and executive committee for four years. In September 2020, Bernhardt was elected to a four year term as the chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party 127 to 51 against Lynda Woolard, a party organizer. She succeeded Karen Carter Peterson. Bernhardt campaigned on her ability to reverse the party's decline in the state and appeal to moderate and rural voters. She has addressed the North and South divide in Louisiana Democratic politics. The Louisiana Democratic Party (french: Parti démocrate de Louisiane) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the state of Louisiana. Dominated by the conservative planter elite through much of the 19th century, the party was historically prominent in politics since before the American Civil War. It struggled to regain power through Reconstruction, when the Republican Party became competitive due to support by most African Americans and many other Unionists. Shawn D. Wilson is an American politician and transportation official who served as the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development from 2016 to 2023. Wilson unsuccessfully ran for governor of Louisiana in 2023 and came in second place to Republican Jeff Landry in a jungle primary receiving 25.9% of the vote. Karen Carter Peterson
Karen Carter Peterson (born November 1, 1969) is an American lawyer and former politician who served as a member of the Louisiana State House from 1999 to 2010, then as the state senator from the 5th district until her resignation in 2022. She also served as the chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party from 2012 to 2020, becoming the first female chair of the state party. In 2008, Peterson became as Democratic National Committeewoman for Louisiana. In 2017, Peterson was elected vice chair of civic engagement and voter participation for the Democratic National Committee. In April 2022, Peterson resigned from the Louisiana Senate, citing mental health issues and a gambling addiction.
