Kathy Rastle
Kathleen Rastle is a cognitive psychologist and Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London where she was previously the Head of Department of Psychology (2015-2019). Her research has made fundamental contributions to understanding of reading and learning to read. Education Rastle did her PhD with Professor Max Coltheart at Macquarie University, where she contributed to the development of the DRC model of reading, a computational theory of how adults read aloud single words. Career Subsequently, her work has focused on the statistical regularities present in written language, and on how learners acquire knowledge of these through instruction and experience. She has been particularly interested in understanding how written language conveys meaningful (morphological) information and in how skilled, adult readers use this information in the initial stages of word recognition. Phonics is a method for teaching people how to read and write an alphabetic language (such as English, Arabic or Russian). Anne Castles
Anne Castles is a cognitive scientist of reading and language, with a particular focus on reading development and developmental dyslexia. Early life Castles was born in Canberra, Australia and attended St Clare's College, Canberra finishing in 1982. She later moved to Sydney. Education Castles completed her honours degree in psychology at the Australian National University in 1987 and her PhD thesis at Macquarie University in 1993. Max Coltheart acknowledged her contribution to his own studies in learning to read and developmental dyslexia. Kate Nation
Kate Nation is an experimental psychologist and expert on language and literacy development in school age children. She is Professor of Experimental Psychology and Fellow of St. John's College of the University of Oxford, where she directs the ReadOxford project and the Language and Cognitive Development Research Group. Nation won the Spearman Medal in 2000, an award given by the British Psychological Society for outstanding published work by an early career psychologist. Nation's Spearman Medal lecture focused on children with poor reading comprehension whose deficits in language processing often go unnoticed. Reading is the process of taking in the sense or meaning of letters, symbols, etc., especially by sight or touch.
