Kathy Hammond
Kathryn "Kathy" Hammond (born November 2, 1951) is an American athlete who mainly competed in the 400 meters. Hammond was born in Sacramento, California. She was a child prodigy, winning the National Indoor Championship at 440 yards in 1967, when she was just 15 year old. She competed for the United States at the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany where she won the bronze medal in the women's 400 meters. She then competed in the 4 x 400 meters where she won the silver medal with her teammates Mable Fergerson, Madeline Manning and Cheryl Toussaint. Club Affiliation: Kathy Hammond represented the Sacramento Road Runners in 1971, and the Will's Spikettes in 1967-1970. She broke the American Record at 440-yards in 52.2 8/12/1972. Cheryl Renee Toussaint (born December 16, 1952) is an American athlete who mainly competed in the 800 metres. She grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, where she attended Erasmus Hall High School, setting the indoor record in the 600-yard run in 1970, the same year she graduated from high school. The National Track and Field Hall of Fame is a museum operated by The Armory Foundation in conjunction with USA Track & Field. It is located within the Armory Foundation (the former Fort Washington Avenue Armory) at 216 Fort Washington Avenue, between 168th and 169th Streets, in Washington Heights, in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Madeline Manning
Madeline Manning Mims (born January 11, 1948) is a former American runner. Between 1967 and 1981 she won ten national titles and set a number of American records. She participated in the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Summer Olympics. She likely also would have participated in the 1980 Games in Moscow, had they not been boycotted by the United States. At the 1968 Olympics she won a gold medal in the 800 m, one of only two American women to win this event. (To date, the other was Athing Mu who won gold in the 2020 Olympics.) Until 2008, she was the youngest winner of the event. At the 1972 Games in Munich she won a silver medal in the relay with teammates Mable Fergerson, Kathy Hammond, and Cheryl Toussaint. When she was 3 years old, she was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and not expected to live. She recovered, but was consistently sick until she was a teen.
