Kathy Balngayngu Marika
Kathy Balngayngu Marika (born 1957) is an Aboriginal Australian dancer known for her performances with Bangarra Dance Theatre, with which she served as artist-in-residence and cultural consultant. Early life Marika is part of the Rirratjingu clan in the Yirrkala community of Arnhem Land. She is the youngest of five sisters and grew up dancing with female relatives as part of her culture. Career When Marika was forty, she joined the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association, which led her to working with Bangarra Dance Theatre. She first performed with the company in 2003. Writing in ''The Australian'' that same year, critic Martin Buzacott wrote that she was "crucial" to the company's performance of ''Bush'', bringing, "a natural authority and an intense dignity to the performance." Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders collectively. It is generally used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed. Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups. Bangarra Dance Theatre
Bangarra Dance Theatre is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance company focused on contemporary dance. It was founded by African American dancer and choreographer Carole Y. Johnson, Gumbaynggirr man Rob Bryant, and South African-born Cheryl Stone. Stephen Page was artistic director from 1991 to 2021, with Frances Rings taking over in 2022. Artist-in-residence, or artist residencies, encompass a wide spectrum of artistic programs which involve a collaboration between artists and hosting organisations, institutions, or communities. Dangu People
The Dangu (Dhaŋu, Dhangu) are an Aboriginal Australian people of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, one of many Yolŋu peoples. They are, according to Norman Tindale, to be carefully distinguished from the Djaŋu. Two prominent clans of the Dangu are the Rirratjingu and Galpu clans. Country The extent of Dangu territory could not be established by Tindale, who located them in the general area of Yirrkala Mission, Cape Arnhem, Melville Bay, and Port Bradshaw. Yirrkala
Yirrkala is a small community in East Arnhem Region, Northern Territory, Australia, southeast of the large mining town of Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, Nhulunbuy, on the Gove Peninsula in Arnhem Land. Arnhem Land
Arnhem Land is a historical region of the Northern Territory of Australia, with the term still in use. The NAISDA Dance College (usually referred to as simply NAISDA) is a performing arts training college based in Kariong, New South Wales for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. It was established as the Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Scheme (AISDS) in 1975, which became the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) in 1988. Sydney Theatre Company (STC) is an Australian theatre company based in Sydney, New South Wales. Stephen Page
Stephen George Page (born 1965) is an Australian choreographer, film director and former dancer. He is the current artistic director of the Bangarra Dance Theatre, an Indigenous Australian dance company. Page is descended from the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali of the Yugambeh people from southeast Queensland, Australia. In 2015 his directorial debut film, ''Spear'', was shown at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Career Stephen Page was one of 12 children, raised in the Brisbane suburb of Mt Gravatt. Page's mother did not celebrate her Aboriginal identity until she met Page's father. He was educated at the Cavendish Road State High School, Brisbane. Deadly Awards 2011
The 2011 Deadly Awards were hosted by Aaron Pedersen and Casey Donovan (singer), Casey Donovan at the Sydney Opera House on 27 September 2011.
