Kathleen Anne Baird Hall
Kathleen Anne Baird Hall (Chinese name: He Mingqing - 何明清) (4 October 1896 – 3 April 1970) was a New Zealand nurse and Anglican missionary who served in China. She was born in Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand on 4 October 1896. She trained at Auckland public hospital. In 1922 she was accepted by the Anglican society for the Propagation of the Gospel for missionary work in China. Mission in China In 1923, she arrived in Beijing (at that time called 'Beiping'). For several years she worked at the Peking Union Medical College, which was a well-funded hospital operated by protestant missionaries. She went through several years of language training and eventually was put in charge of a hospital in Datong. In 1927, she was transferred to a hospital in Anguo, where she was placed in the hospital management. Anguo was the first western hospital in a rural part of northern China. Tom Newnham
Thomas Oliver Newnham (20 November 1926 – 15 December 2010) was a New Zealand political activist and educationalist. He was involved in several left wing causes: attacking institutional racism in New Zealand, and opposing the 1981 Springbok Tour and apartheid in general (both carried out in his role as Secretary of CARE). He spoke Cantonese and Mandarin fluently after living in China and was heavily involved in helping Chinese immigrants in his later years. He wrote the book ''Dr Bethune's Angel: The Life of Kathleen Hall'' about the New Zealand missionary nurse who worked with the Canadian physician, Dr Norman Bethune, in China in the 1930s. In the 1988 Queen's Birthday Honours, Newnham was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for community service. Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay ( mi, Te Matau-a-Māui) is a local government region on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. The region's name derives from Hawke Bay, which was named by Captain James Cook in honour of Admiral Edward Hawke. The region is governed by Hawke's Bay Regional Council. Tian'anmen
The Tiananmen (also Tian'anmen (天安门), Tienanmen, T’ien-an Men; ), or the Gate of Heaven-Sent Pacification, is a monumental gate in the city center of Beijing, China, the front gate of the Imperial City of Beijing, located near the city's Central Business District, and widely used as a national symbol. First built during the Ming dynasty in 1420, Tiananmen was the entrance to the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located.
