Catherine Hayes (murderer)
Catherine Hayes (1690 – 9 May 1726), sometimes spelled Catharine Hayes, was an English woman who was burned at the stake for committing petty treason by killing her husband. Early life and marriage Catherine Hall was born near Birmingham in 1690, the daughter of poor parents. At the age of 16, she obtained employment as a servant within the household of a Warwickshire farmer named Hayes. The son of this household was 21-year-old John Hayes, who worked as a carpenter, and who soon fell in love with her. Within a year of their acquaintance, the two were married. Several years into their marriage, the couple moved to London and set up a small shop in Oxford Road, Tyburn, while renting lodgings. Hayes also became a successful pawnbroker, and his wife would bear 12 children. Catherine would later claim that her husband was abusive, kept her isolated from church, and murdered their newborn children. Catherine Hayes, married name Catherine Bushnell, (1818? – 11 August 1861) was a world-famous Irish soprano of the Victorian era. According to London's ''Daily Express'', "Hayes was the 'Madonna' of her day; she was the 19th-century operatic equivalent of the world's most famous pop star." Biography Youth in Limerick and education in Dublin and Paris (1818–1845) Hayes was baptised on 8 November 1818, in St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick. She was born of humble Anglo-Irish parentage at 4 Patrick Street, Limerick. Her father was the musician Arthur Williamson Hayes; abandoned the family in 1823, and Catherine Hayes, aged 5, grew up very poor with her mother, Mary Carroll, and sister. ''Catherine: A Story'' was the first full-length work of fiction produced by William Makepeace Thackeray. It first appeared in serialized instalments in ''Fraser's Magazine'' between May 1839 and February 1840, credited to "Ikey Solomons, Esq. Junior". Thackeray's original intention in writing it was to criticize the Newgate school of crime fiction, exemplified by Bulwer-Lytton and Harrison Ainsworth, whose works Thackeray felt glorified criminals. Thackeray even included Dickens in this criticism for his portrayal of the good-hearted streetwalker Nancy and the charming pickpocket, the Artful Dodger, in ''Oliver Twist''. Ainsworth's ''Jack Sheppard'' portrayed a real-life prison breaker and thief from the eighteenth century in flattering terms. Kathryn Hays (born Kay Piper; July 26, 1934 – March 25, 2022) was an American actress, best known for her role as Kim Hughes on the CBS soap opera ''As the World Turns'' from 1972 to 2010. Life and career Hays was born Kay Piper in Princeton, Illinois, on July 26, 1934, the only child of Roger and Daisy (Hays) Piper. Her parents divorced shortly after her birth, and Hays was raised by her mother, a bookkeeper and a banker, and her stepfather, salesman Arnold Gottlieb. She grew up in Joliet. She took classes at Northwestern University, and worked as a model. In 1962, she changed her name to Kathryn Hays (using her mother's maiden name for her last name). Hays' first marriage was to Sidney Steinberg in 1957, with whom she had a daughter, Sherri. In 1966, Hays married actor Glenn Ford; the couple divorced in 1969. Kathryn Isobel Hay (born 24 November 1975 in Launceston) is an Australian Labor politician and former member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly in the electorate of Bass. She was first elected in the 2002 election. Hay was the first woman of Aboriginal descent to be elected in Tasmania (in her maiden speech she points out that her Aboriginal ancestors are Western Australian, not Tasmanian). She was chosen as Miss Tasmania (1999) and Miss Australia (1999). Hay did not re-contest her seat at the 2006 election. Her term ended when parliament was dissolved on 17 March 2006.
