Kates Hill
Kates Hill, or Kate's Hill, is a residential area in Dudley, West Midlands, England. History Kates Hill was the scene of chaos in 1648 when parliamentarians used it as their base in the Civil War against King Charles I. As a result, many roads in the area are named in honour of parliamentary figures from that era and afterwards; these include Oliver Cromwell (Oliver Close and Cromwell Street) and Robert Peel (Peel Street). It is believed that from Cromwell Street, parliamentary leader Oliver Cromwell fired his cannons at the royalist garrison that was Dudley's Norman Castle. Kates Hill was not developed as a residential area until around the 1830s, when a large number of houses were built to accommodate people moving to the Black Country in hope of landing jobs in the ever-growing number of factories and coalpits that were being created in the region at this time. Russells Hall Estate
The Russells Hall Estate is a residential area of Dudley, West Midlands, England. It is situated approximately one mile to the west of Dudley town centre. The area was extensively mined for coal during the Industrial Revolution and would remain open for many years, which meant the district had become highly industrialised in the then heyday of the Black Country's industrial past. This process ceased in about 1950 when the local council earmarked the area for housing development, to rehouse hundreds of families from the dilapidated 19th century terraces which were still standing in the town centre around The Inhedge and Stafford Street. The land at Russells Hall was then made safe and allowed to settle until house building commenced. Wrens Nest Estate
The Wren's Nest Estate is a housing estate located to the north west of the town centre of Dudley, West Midlands, England. History Housing development Local industrialisation was considerable in the early 20th century, as the district had become highly industrialised in the then heyday of the Black Country's industrial past. The Wren's Nest Estate was mostly developed with council housing and between 1934 and 1939 to rehouse around 1,000 families from town centre slum clearances, along with the adjoining Priory Estate which was built around the same time. The land was historically in Sedgley (in the county of Staffordshire), but was transferred to Dudley in 1926 in order for the housing estates to be built. Gornal, West Midlands
Gornal is a suburban area and electoral ward of the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, in the West Midlands county in England. It encompasses three historic villages: Upper Gornal, Lower Gornal, and Gornal Wood. Gornal was formerly part of Staffordshire, prior to the creation of the West Midlands in 1974. It now falls under the town of Dudley and uses the DY postcode. Gornal is roughly 11 miles outside of Birmingham. The three Gornal villages were originally a part of the ancient manor of Sedgley until 1894, when the area became part of Sedgley Urban District. Marion Elaine Richardson (9 October 1892 – 12 November 1946) was a British educator and author of books on penmanship and handwriting. Tipton Slasher
William Perry (1819 – 24 December 1880), known as "The Tipton Slasher" after his native town of Tipton, was a British heavyweight prize fighter of the 19th century and claimed the championship of England, with some dispute, for two periods between 1850 and 1857. His fighting career began in London in 1835 and after fighting a number of highly rated championship contenders, he first claimed the English heavyweight championship by defeating Tom Paddock in twenty-seven rounds on 17 December 1850. In 1851 he lost the English heavyweight title in a controversial referee's decision to Harry Broome which he strongly disputed. After the leading contenders of the day refused to fight him, Perry reclaimed the English title until Tom Sayers defeated him in a championship bout in 1857. St Thomas's Community Network
St Thomas's Community Network is a community facility which serves the St Thomas's parish of Dudley, West Midlands, England. The opportunity for a large community centre in the Kates Hill area was on the horizon in October 1988, when Dudley council confirmed that the Blue Coat School on Beechwood Road (a building which had started life in 1929 as Rosland Secondary School) would be merging with The Dudley School in the town centre with effect from September 1989 to form Castle High School, and that the Beechwood Road buildings would close in July 1990 after a year as the Castle High annexe. The dream of a community centre for one of the most deprived areas of Dudley became reality in 1991, when St Thomas's Community Network opened at Beechwood Road. It offers youth club facilities to children and teenagers, as well as educational support to young people who require assistance with literacy, numeracy or English as a second language. St James Academy is a secondary school located in Dudley, West Midlands, England for pupils 11 to 16 years. It is also a specialist Arts College. The academy was formed in 2017 from Castle High School as part of the Dudley Academies Trust, in association with Dudley College. The new name was officially adopted in September 2018.
