The Shire of Katanning is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about north of Albany and about southeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Katanning. History The Katanning Road District was gazetted on 18 May 1892. Katanning is a town located south-east of Perth, Western Australia on the Great Southern Highway. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, Katanning had a population of 3,687. History The name ''Katanning'' is derived from the native name for a camping place. That native name for the camp was 'Kartannup' - 'Kart' meaning head and 'annup' meaning meeting or camping place. In the very early days before town settlement, a big tribe of natives lived in the area. When the tribe of another district would visit annually, Kartannup was the head camp or meeting place. In the 21st century, in one of the many possible examples of the attempted re-writing of history, some have tried to suggest that ''Kartanup'', means "clear pool of sweet water", or that ''Katanning'', means "spiders on your back".
