Kassala State
Kassala (, called ''Ash Sharqiyah'' during 1991—1994) is one of the 18 '' wilayat'' (states) of Sudan. It has an area of 36,710 km2 and an estimated population of approximately 2,519,071 in 2018. Kassala is the capital of the state; other towns in Kassala include Aroma, Hamashkoraib, Halfa el Jadida (New Halfa), Khashm el Girba and Telkuk. In 2016, Kassala State suffered a severe bread shortage. Below is a list of the 18 states of the Sudan (Arabic names are in parentheses). Prior to 9 July 2011, the Republic of the Sudan was composed of 25 states. The ten southern states now form part of the independent country of South Sudan. Two additional states were created in 2012 within the Darfur region, and one in 2013 in Kordofan, bringing the total to 18. Khashm el-Girba () is a town in Kassala State, north-eastern Sudan Sudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa. Butana
The Butana (Arabic: البطانة, ''Buṭāna''), historically called the Island of Meroë, is the region between the Atbarah River, Atbara and the Nile in the Sudan. South of Khartoum it is bordered by the Blue Nile and in the east by Lake Tana in Ethiopia. It should not be confused with the Gezira (state), Gezira, the region west of the Blue Nile and east of the White Nile. Geological characteristics of the Butana are sandy and stony soils, light non-cracking clay, and dark cracking clay; the superficial clays cover over 70% of the plain. Although there are very limited water resources, seasonal surface water wells and a few deep bore wells are present. A tropical continental climate provides rain in the southern section of the plain. Two vegetation zones feature a semi-desert Acacia shrub, short grasslands, and a low woodland savannah.
