Kartepe
Kartepe is a town and district of Kocaeli Province, Turkey. The mayor is Şükrü Karabalık ( AKP). Geography Kartepe (literally Snowy hill referring to mountains to the south) is situated at to the east of Kocaeli Gulf. It is almost merged to İzmit, the province center and it included in Greater Kocaeli (see Metropolitan centers in Turkey). Kartepe Mountains are to the south and Sapanca Lake is to the east of Kartepe. The urban population of Kartepe is 85847 as of 2010. History Kartepe, then known as Köseköy, was founded in 1600s. After the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey agreement, Turks from Greece were settled in Köseköy in 1920s. Later people from Black Sea coast were also settled around Köseköy. Being a part of industrial area the population increased and in 1970 it was declared a seat of township. Kocaeli Province
Kocaeli Province ( tr, Kocaeli ili, ) is a Provinces of Turkey, province of Turkey and one of only three not to have the same official name as its capital, İzmit, which is thus also sometimes called Kocaeli. The province is the successor of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman-era Sanjak of Kocaeli. The largest towns in the province are İzmit and Gebze. İzmit
İzmit () is a district and the central district of Kocaeli province, Turkey. It is located at the Gulf of İzmit in the Sea of Marmara, about east of Istanbul, on the northwestern part of Anatolia. As of the last 31/12/2019 estimation, the city center had a population of 367,990. Kocaeli province (including rural areas) had a population of 1,953,035 inhabitants whom 1,111,789 lived in the Izmit City built-up (or metro) area made of Kartepe, Basiksele, Korfez, Golcuk, Derince and even Sapanca (in Sakaria Province) largely being conurbated. The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey ( el, Ἡ Ἀνταλλαγή, I Antallagí, ota, مبادله, Mübâdele, tr, Mübadele) stemmed from the "Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations" signed at Lausanne, Switzerland, on 30 January 1923, by the governments of Kingdom of Greece, Greece and Turkey. Lake Sapanca
Lake Sapanca ( tr, Sapanca Gölü) (previous Greek name: Boáne (Βοάνη)) is a fresh water lake in Turkey, between the Gulf of İzmit and the Adapazarı Meadow. The lake has a catchment area of 251 km², surface area is 45 km², a length 16 km east–west / 5 km north–south, and a maximum depth of 52 m. Metropolitan Centers In Turkey
There are 81 provinces in Turkey ( tr, il). Among the 81 provinces, 30 provinces are designated metropolitan municipalities ( tr, büyükşehir belediyeleri).
