Karpathos ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Καρπάθου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the modern regions of Greece, region of South Aegean. The regional unit covers the islands of Karpathos, Kasos, Saria Island, Saria and several smaller islands in the Aegean Sea. Administration As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Karpathos was created out of part of the former Dodecanese Prefecture. It is subdivided into 2 municipalities. Kasos
Kasos (; el, Κάσος, ), also Casos, is a Greek island municipality in the Dodecanese. It is the southernmost island in the Aegean Sea, and is part of the Karpathos regional unit. The capital of the island is Fri. , its population was 1,224. Names There are several references to the island in the works of ancient authors, including as Amphe (), Astrabe (), and Achni (). Concerning Kasos (), Samuel Bochart (1674) and Victor Bérard (1902) suggested that it could derive from the Canaanite word ''kas'' , and that it is a doublet with Greek Achni (). The island is also known in Italian as Bertarelli, 139 and in Turkish as or (). Geography Kasos lies southwest of Karpathos, and east of Crete. The provinces of Greece ( el, επαρχία, "eparchy") were sub-divisions of some the country's prefectures of Greece, prefectures. From 1887, the provinces were abolished as actual administrative units, but were retained for some state services, especially financial and educational services, as well as for electoral purposes. Before the Second World War, there were 139 provinces, and after the war, with the addition of the Dodecanese, Dodecanese Islands, their number grew to 147. The ''Government Gazette'' ( el, Εφημερίς της Κυβερνήσεως, translit=Efimeris tis Kyverniseos, translit-std=ISO, lit=Government Gazette) is the official journal of the Government of Greece which lists all laws passed in a set time period ratified by Cabinet and President. Saria Island
Saria Island ( el, Σαρία), anciently known as Sarus or Saros ( grc, Σάρος), is an island in Greece. It is a rocky, volcanic island just to the north of Karpathos, separated from it by a strait 100 m (330 ft) wide. It is part of the Dodekanissos archipelago. In ancient times, a city-state called Saros was situated on the island. It was a member of the Delian League. Administratively, it is part of the community of Olympos. The 2011 census reported a resident population of 45 persons. It has little plant or animal life, and has a number of steep cliffs. Although only shepherds live on Saria now, the ruins of the ancient city of Nisyros can be found here. It is also a breeding area for Eleonora's falcons. Although the name is subject to dispute, scholars link it with the name of an ancient Greek princess named Katherine from a line of Saria royalty. Karpathos
Karpathos ( el, Κάρπαθος, ), also Carpathos, is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Together with the neighboring smaller Saria Island it forms the municipality of Karpathos, which is part of the Karpathos regional unit. Because of its remote location, Karpathos has preserved many peculiarities of dress, customs and dialect, the last resembling those of Crete and Cyprus. Vehicle Registration Plates Of Greece
Greek vehicle registration plates are composed of three letters and four digits per plate (e.g. ΑΑΑ–1000) printed in black on a white background. The letters represent the district (prefecture) that issues the plates while the numbers range from 1000 to 9999. As of 2004 a blue strip was added on the left showing the country code of Greece (GR) in white text and the Flag of Europe in yellow. Similar plates but of square size with numbers ranging from 1 to 999 are issued for motorcycles which exceed 50 cc in engine size. With the exception of Athens and Thessaloniki which are represented by just the first letter of the three, all other districts are represented by the first 2 letters.
