Karoowia Salazinica
''Xanthoparmelia salazinica'' is a species of lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. Found in South Africa, it was described as a new species in 1989 by American lichenologist Mason Hale. He classified it in ''Karoowia'', a genus that has since been placed in synonymy with ''Xanthoparmelia'' following molecular phylogenetic analysis published in 2010. The type specimen was collected by Hale in near Middelpos (Cape Province); here it was found growing in low sandstone ridges in karoo. The specific epithet refers to the presence of salazinic acid, the main secondary compound found in the lichen. Mason Hale
Mason Ellsworth Hale, Jr. (September 23, 1929 – April 23, 1990) was one of the most prolific lichenologists of the 20th century. Many of his scholarly articles focused on the taxonomy of the family Parmeliaceae. Hale was one of the first lichen experts to incorporate secondary chemistry and technology such as computers and scanning electron microscopy into taxonomic work. Mason Hale published approximately two hundred articles and books on various aspects of lichen biology including taxonomy, anatomy, chemistry, and ecology. Hale also wrote several books aimed at education and increasing accessibility to lichens. Early life and education Mason Hale Jr. grew up on a farm outside of Winsted, Connecticut. Usnic Acid
Usnic acid is a naturally occurring dibenzofuran derivative found in several lichen species with the formula C18H16O7. It was first isolated by German scientist W. Knop in 1844 and first synthesized between 1933-1937 by Curd and Robertson. Usnic acid was identified in many genera of lichens including ''Usnea'', '' Cladonia'', ''Hypotrachyna'', ''Lecanora'', ''Ramalina'', '' Evernia'', ''Parmelia'' and '' Alectoria''. Salazinic acid is a depsidone with a lactone ring. It is found in some lichens, and is especially prevalent in ''Parmotrema'' and ''Bulbothrix'', where its presence or absence is often used to help classify species in those genera. History In 1897, Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf named the chemical he originally isolated from the African species '' Stereocaulon salazinum'' as salazinic acid. Later studies showed that the compound he named was actually norstictic acid. In 1933, Yasuhiko Asahina and J.
