Karoceras
''Karoceras'' is a genus of Oncocerida, oncocerid nautiloids that lived during the Silurian and possibly Early Devonian, type genus for the Karoceratidae. The shell is a compressed, exogastric cyrtocone, section sub ovoid. The siphuncle is ventral, near the outer, externally convex curvature. Septal necks flair outwardly, segments are inflated ventrally and are straight dorsally, a character of the family. ''Karoceras'' is the only member of the Karoceratidae that is actinosiphonate, a character produced by lamellae projecting radially inward toward the middle of the siphuncle from the connecting rings. Oncocerida
The Oncocerida comprise a diverse group of generally small nautiloid cephalopods known from the Middle Ordovician to the Mississippian (early Carboniferous; one possible member is known from the Early Permian), in which the connecting rings are thin and siphuncle segments are variably expanded (Flower, 1950). At present the order consists of some 16 families, a few of which, such as the Oncoceratidae, Brevicoceratidae, and Acleistoceratidae contain a fair number of genera each while others like the Trimeroceratidae and Archiacoceratidae are represented by only two or three (Sweet, 1964). Physical characteristics The shells of oncocerids are primarily somewhat compressed cyrtoconic brevicones. More advanced forms include gyrocones, serpenticones, torticones, and elongate orthocones and cyrtocones, reflective of the different families and genera (Flower, 1950; Sweet, 1964). Osbornoceras
''Osbornoceras'' is a genus of Lower Silurian cyrtoconic nautiloid cephalopods known from Ohio and possibly Manitoba, one of five general currently included in the oncocerid family Karoceratidae. Diagnosis -morphology ''Osbornoceras'' grew to be somewhat large and is characterized by a narrow, compressed, strongly curved, exograstric shell. The venter, on the outside curvature, is narrowly rounded while the dorsum, on the opposite inside curvature, is more broadly rounded. The body chamber narrows toward the aperture, which has a deep hypomomic sinus. The siphuncle of ''Osbornoceras'' is ventral but not in contact with the ventral wall of the shell. Segments are empty and expanded ventrally but are virtually straight dorsally. Connecting rings are thin, septal necks cyrtochoanitic (outwardly flared). Shuranoceras
''Shuranoceras'' is a genus in the extinct oncocerid family Karoceratidae that plied the shallow sea floor from the Early Silurian to the Early Devonian. ''Shuranoceras'' is characterized by a smooth, compressed, slowly enlarging orthoconic shell with a ventral submarginal siphuncle composed of complex segments. ''Shuranoceras'' was found in middle Silurian strata in Ferghana, central Asia. Oncocerids (Order Oncocerida) were nautiloid cephalopods that lived during the early part of the Paleozoic Era. They are closely related to the Nautilids that include the living '' Nautilus'', but on a different evolutionary branch. Llandovery (; cy, Llanymddyfri ) is a market town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It lies on the River Tywi and at the junction of the A40 and A483 roads, about north-east of Carmarthen, north of Swansea and west of Brecon. History Etymology The name of the town derives from ', meaning "church enclosure amid the waters", i. e. between the Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence.
