Karnaval
''Karnaval'' is a French film directed by Thomas Vincent and was released 3 March 1999. The film was nominated for a César Award for Best Debut in 2000. At the 49th Berlin International Film Festival in 1999 it won the Alfred Bauer Prize, a prize awarded in memory of the festival founder. Plot While Dunkirk is in the midst of its Carnival, Larbi, tired of working for nothing for his father, decides to pack it in and re-make his life in the sun of Marseille. When he is waiting for the first train which is to leave in the early hours of the morning, he makes the acquaintance of Béa (Sylvie Testud), who is with her drunk husband. He is straight away captivated by the young woman and she carries him along with her in her passion for the Carnival. The film captures well the character and mad ambience of the extraordinary Dunkirk Carnival. The opinions of the Carnival's friends however remain divided. Sylvie Testud (born 17 January 1971) is a French actress hose film career est Actress for ''Fear and Trembling'' (2003), and the European Film Award for Best Actress for ''Lourdes'' (2009). 49th Berlin International Film Festival
The 49th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 10 to 21 February 1999. The festival opened with ''Aimée & Jaguar'' by Max Färberböck. The Golden Bear was awarded to Canadian-American film '' The Thin Red Line'' directed by Terrence Malick. The retrospective dedicated to Austrian-American theatre and film director Otto Preminger was shown at the festival. 70 mm version of Preminger's 1959 musical film ''Porgy and Bess'' served as the closing night film. Alfred Bauer Prize
The Alfred Bauer Prize was an annual film award, presented by the Berlin International Film Festival, as part of its Silver Bear series of awards, to a film that "opens new perspectives on cinematic art". The prize was suspended in 2020 after it was revealed that the founding director of the festival Alfred Bauer had been an active high-ranking Nazi closely involved in a propaganda organisation set up by Joseph Goebbels. Hervé Pierre (born 22 April 1955) is a French actor and theatre director. He joined the Comédie-Française in 2007 and became a member in 2011. On 14 June 2009, Pierre was awarded the title of Best French Actor by critics. In 2011, he was promoted chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 2011, Knight of the French Legion of Honour. Theatre career Hervé Pierre began to play in theatre troupes first in Les Fins, where he was born, then in the Pontarlier lycee.
