Karl Matthäus Winter
Karl Matthäus Winter (24 December 1932, in Worms – 19 September 2012, in Limburg an der Lahn) was a German artist and sculptor. He created numerous sacred works of art as well as four statues for the new figure cycle on the Cologne Council Tower. Life After finishing school in 1947, Karl Matthäus Winter began his artistic career through an apprenticeship with his father, the sculptor and ceramicist Adam Winter. The apprenticeship was followed in 1951 by a three-year course at the Landeskunstschule Mainz, with Emy Roeder among others. In 1954, he moved to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and became a student of Ewald Mataré. Emy Roeder
Emy Roeder (30 January 1890 – 7 February 1971) was a modern German sculptor born in Würzburg, Germany. During the first third of the twentieth century she was one of a number of women that were associated with the German Expressionist movement of Modern art. She was the first woman to achieve ''Master Student'' of sculpture as a student at the Berlin Academy In 1937 her work was labeled Degenerate art by the Nazis. After World War II she was arrested in Italy by the Allies because she was a German citizen and then sent to an internment camp. She received the Villa Romana prize in 1936, and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her life work in 1960. She died, aged 81, in Mainz. Ewald Mataré
Ewald Wilhelm Hubert Mataré (25 February 1887 in Burtscheid, Aachen – 28 March 1965 in Büderich) was a German painter and sculptor, who dealt with, among other things, the figures of men and animals in a stylized form. Career Mataré began his instruction as an artist at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1907. He was a student of Prof. Julius Ehrentraut (b. 1841), Lovis Corinth (1858–1925), and History painter Arthur Kampf. In 1918, he joined the November Group. Mataré first dedicated himself to sculpture after finishing his painting studies. A great part of his sculpted work are of animal figures. In 1932 he received a professorship at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. After the Machtergreifung of 1933 however, all cultural and artistic life in Germany was brought into ideological alignment by the Nazis; Mataré was denounced as "degenerate" and expelled from his position. Elmar Hillebrand
Elmar Hillebrand (11 October 1925, Cologne8 January 2016, Cologne) was a German sculptor., WDR, 11. Januar 2016 Life and education After graduating from high school at Apostelgymnasium (1943) and then doing military service and being a prisoner of war, Elmar Hillebrand studied from 1946 to 1950 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Joseph Enseling and as a master student with Ewald Mataré, Joseph Beuys, among others. After studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris with Ossip Zadkine as well as stays abroad and trips (including to Algeria ), he exhibited his own work for the first time in 1952.
