Karl Aegerter (16 March 1888 – 12 May 1969) was a prolific Swiss painter, draftsman, etcher, muralist, illustrator, designer and sculptor. Now in numerous private and public collections, Aegerter's works are often likened to those of Edvard Munch. Childhood At the age of seven, young Karl was given up as a “Verdingbub” (foster child), a common practice in an impoverished Switzerland at the time, as struggling farmers gave up their children to urban foster families for a given period of time. During this time, Karl's older brother and role model, August Samuel Aegerter (Basel 17 October 1878 Basel – I June 1971, Basel), established himself in Basel as an artist, inspiring the young Karl. Hans Brasch
Hans Brasch (2 April 1882 – 13 May 1973) was a German expressionist painter. Since his death, his reputation has been based primarily on his portraits. Other favourite subjects included still lifes of flowers and landscapes featuring the hill country and forests of south-west Germany. Readers of the (by English standards rather mildly) satirical magazine Fliegende Blätter were also able to enjoy his line drawings during the early decades of the twentieth century. Niklaus Stoecklin
Niklaus Stoecklin (19 April 1896 – 1 December 1982) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist. He is regarded as a Swiss exponent of New Objectivity (''Neue Sachlichkeit'') and Magic Realism, and at least with his early works numbers among their international co-founders. He was also a poster designer of international renown. Early life and education Stoecklin was born in Basel as the son of businessman Johann Niklaus Stoecklin (1859–1923) and Genoveva Fanny Stoecklin, née Müller (1859–1939). Neue Sachlichkeit
The New Objectivity (in german: Neue Sachlichkeit) was a movement in German art that arose during the 1920s as a reaction against expressionism. The term was coined by Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub, the director of the ''Kunsthalle'' in Mannheim, who used it as the title of an art exhibition staged in 1925 to showcase artists who were working in a post-expressionist spirit. As these artists—who included Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad, Rudolf Schlichter and Jeanne Mammen—rejected the self-involvement and romantic longings of the expressionists, Weimar intellectuals in general made a call to arms for public collaboration, engagement, and rejection of romantic idealism.
