Karl-Liebknecht-Straße
Karl-Liebknecht-Straße is a major street in the central Mitte district of the German capital Berlin. It is named after Karl Liebknecht (1871–1919), one of the founders of the Communist Party of Germany. The street connects the Unter den Linden boulevard with the Prenzlauer Allee arterial road leading to the northern city limits. Although part of the street dates back to medieval times, most of the buildings at its side were built in the 1960s, when East Berlin's centre was redesigned as the capital of East Germany. History The origins of the street lie in the quarter that arose about 1270 around St. Mary's Church, located north of Alt-Berlin's initial settlement. Schloßplatz (German for "Palace Square" or "Castle Square") is a square located on Museum Island (''Museumsinsel'') in Berlin, Germany. It measures about 225 m by 175 m, with its long side oriented on an axis approximately southwest/northeast. At its west corner is the Schlossbrücke (Palace Bridge), from which Unter den Linden leads west to the Brandenburg Gate. From the same corner, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße runs northeast alongside the square and on to Alexanderplatz. Until the early 20th century, only the square south of the palace was so named, the square north of it being the ''Lustgarten''. Prenzlauer Allee is a major avenue in the Prenzlauer Berg district of the Germany, German capital Berlin and one of the main thoroughfares of the north-eastern Pankow borough. Unter den Linden (, "under the linden trees") is a boulevard in the central Mitte district of Berlin, the capital of Germany. Running from the City Palace to Brandenburg Gate, it is named after the linden (lime in England and Ireland, not related to citrus lime) trees that line the grassed pedestrian mall on the median and the two broad carriageways. Rathaus Bridge (german: Rathausbrücke, "Town Hall Bridge") is a bridge in the central Mitte district of Berlin, Germany. Rebuilt in 2012, it is one of the oldest connections between the historic city centres of Alt-Berlin and Cölln across the Spree river. It is named after the nearby Rotes Rathaus city hall. The ' () is a park on Museum Island in central Berlin, near the site of the former () of which it was originally a part. At various times in its history, the park has been used as a parade ground, a place for mass rallies and a public park. The Berlin Stadtbahn ("city railway") is a major railway thoroughfare in the German capital Berlin, which runs through Berlin from east to west. It connects the eastern district of Friedrichshain with Charlottenburg in the west via 11 intermediate stations including Hauptbahnhof. August Orth
August Friedrich Wilhelm Orth (25 July 1828, Windhausen - 11 May 1901, Berlin) was a German architect and designer. Life and work He was the son of a manor tenant. In 1834, his family relocated to Korbach. After graduating from secondary school there, in 1848, he attended the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he studied architecture. He also studied painting at the local art school. In 1850, he transferred to the Bauakademie in Berlin. His instructors there included Friedrich August Stüler, Heinrich Strack, Karl Bötticher and Wilhelm Stier, who introduced him to the newer trends. In 1854, he passed the examination for construction manager. Unable to find work immediately, he chose instead to pursue his artistic studies, at the Prussian Academy of Arts.
